What do an Irish pub and Jack-o’-lanterns have in common? Well, I am glad you asked. Halloween actually started in Ireland over 2,000 years ago. The Irish name for Halloween is Oíche Shamhna, pronounced “EE-hyeh-HOW-nuh,” which translates to “Eve of Samhain.” As author Derek Landy wrote in The Telegraph, “If there’s one thing the Irish know to do really, really well, it’s scaring the living bejaysus out of you.” Halloween sounds like a wonderful time to visit Ireland, since they really know how to celebrate their Celtic past, with fire, festivals, and spine-tingling fun.
If you cannot get away this year to visit Ireland and check out all the sights, you can instead come to Murphy’s Pub, located at 1928 N 45th Street, to carve yourself an Irish Jack-o’-lantern on Sunday, October 26th, from 11 am to 1 pm. Please reserve your pumpkin in advance by calling 206-634-2110. For $20, Murphy’s will provide the pumpkin and carving kits. Food and drink specials will be offered as well. Have a few children who would love to participate? No problem, since they are welcome. And if you are just a grown-up child at heart and have never carved a pumpkin before, you are welcome as well.
