Six Weekends of Southbound I-5 Lane Reductions

This just in from WSDOT regarding the Revive I-5 project. Closures of I-5 for construction and repairs affecting the Ship Canal Bridge will start this weekend.

Sooo remember when we said we’ll be back later for more work on the southbound I-5 lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge? Well, later is here. (The crowd goes mild 🥳)

Friday night, October 10, through Monday morning, October 13, will mark the first of six weekends of southbound lane reductions to finish drainage improvements. Don’t worry, UW and (if necessary) Mariners fans, southbound lanes won’t close until after your games are out on Friday night.

In full, our southbound I-5 Ship Canal Bridge lane reduction weekends will be:
• October 10–13
• October 17–20
• October 31–November 3
• November 21–24
• December 5–8
• January 9–12

During this work, southbound I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge from about NE 45th Street to the SR 520 interchange will be reduced to two lanes. We worked with our partners to select these weekends based on what’s happening in Seattle and to avoid the holidays. In general, lane reductions will begin as early as 10 pm on Fridays and all lanes will be reopened by 5 am on Mondays.

During these weekends, express lanes will run southbound 24/7. So if you’re heading north, just know that lanes won’t flip. Prepare for some delay there.

When we’re done with this round of work, we’ll have a bunch of new and improved drains installed on southbound lanes, bringing us a step closer towards the bigger job ahead in 2026 and 2027.
