I love grand reopenings of any kind—they celebrate something new while honoring what has come before. When I moved to Wallingford three years ago, I volunteered for a year at the FamilyWorks Wallingford Food Bank and saw firsthand how the staff worked in a very tight space to provide food to the community, both in person and through delivery. I also volunteered with their diaper program, which is deeply needed and always appreciated by families. During my time there, I met some of the most wonderful people in our community and cannot say enough about the caring staff and their incredible executive director, Marcia Wright-Soika.
FamilyWorks has been in our neighborhood for over 30 years. Their Wallingford Food Bank is a food assistance program that provides groceries, including fresh produce, meat, and baby supplies, to residents of North Seattle (zip codes 98103, 98115, and 98113) through in-person shopping, online ordering, and home delivery for the homebound. Since last fall, the food bank has operated out of a temporary location on Stone Way N as its home on N 45th Street is being renovated.
At the Grand Reopening celebration on Saturday, April 4th, the doors will be open to showcase a new space designed around dignity, choice, and accessibility. The updated food bank aims to lower barriers to food access and serve even more households across North Seattle.
The event will include remarks from FamilyWorks leadership, elected officials, and community members, along with snacks, refreshments, and family-friendly activities. Guests will also get a first look at the beautifully reimagined space.
I am excited to attend and see the new customer-friendly market design. When they reopen, they will still have their Grocery to Go online market for pickup and delivery. I hope to see everyone there because I cannot wait to see what magic has been done to this space!
