While we all wait to see what happens with the future of the Murphy’s Pub property, I invite you to try my favorite dish on their menu: the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, $16. It’s everything you might want in a well-rounded pub meal. Fried chicken with just the right amount of buffalo sauce, a healthy smattering of veggies and beans, and just enough cheese to remind you it’s still pub food. Select the fries as a side, a pint of Bodhizafa, and your night is set. Let me also be clear – I have not tried everything on the menu. In …
Stone Way Cafe Reopens May 15
Twenty months after shutting down due to the demolition of their previous location, Stone Way Cafe will rise again on May 15. The much-beloved cafe’s new space at 3525 Stone Way N is practically across the street from their old spot, whose next incarnation will be a five-story office/retail building. Longer term residents of Wallingford will remember Stone Way Cafe’s new location at the corner of 35th and Stone as the site of Daly’s Paint & Decorating, one of the many light industrial businesses that once graced this now booming corridor.
Walking down Stone on May 2, I noticed …
Bartells Building Follow-Up!
For inquisitive minds, here is a follow up to a Wallyhood article about Bartells closing, posted in February, found here.
With a chance encounter at the corner of N. 45th and Burke Ave. N., my husband Larry and I met the property manager for the building at 1820 N. 45th, formerly known as Bartells Drugs—Mr. Frank Gellen. We had stopped to thank a man painting out graffiti on the building—who turned out to be the 85-year-old handy man. Mr. Gellen came around the corner and started a conversation about the building and the difficulty he was experiencing with …

After a series of Pharmacy closings leaving the neighborhood wondering what the path forward looked like, we have some good news! Food Bank Renovation and Capital Campaign
Renovation and Expansion
The Wallingford Food Bank shares a space with the library at 1501 N 45th St. Operated by FamilyWorks, the food bank has been unchanged as long as I’ve been around these parts (decades!). Now, however, changes are afoot.
Beginning this summer, the food bank will begin some renovations to the interior of the space. The main area will be redesigned to better serve clients. Per the email we received from FamilyWorks:
The renovated food bank will be bright and welcoming, with rolling modular carts that can be rearranged depending on the needs of the food bank. There …
Wallingford Beautification is a Thing!
Wallingford is a great community. To keep it a livable and stimulating environment, efforts are being made to make it more beautiful with public artworks and community engagement to enhance the beauty of the neighborhood.
The Wallingford Beautification collaboration was launched last November with volunteers from Historic Wallingford, the Wallingford Community Council, Celebrate Wallingford, and the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce. The effort was initiated by Historic Wallingford, to promote the Wallingford-Meridian Streetcar Historic District.
In January, Wallingford Beautification circulated a survey in the community asking participants to prioritize four potential projects to make our community more livable. The results of …
Morris Dancers greet May at Gasworks Park
There are a few things this neighborhood can count on to keep us seasonally aware. Body-painted bike riders trickling in from Fremont in June, a line around the corner from Murphy’s each March…and the Morris Dancers greeting May.
Kimberly wrote to Wallyhood to share the specifics about this year’s May Day dancing:
The Sound and Fury Morris Dancers, Seawitch Women’s Morris, and the Mossyback Morris Men will be greeting the sunrise at Gasworks Park on May Day morning this Wednesday, May 1. Dancing begins around 5:45 am and ends around 7:00am. There will also be the singing of traditional English …
