Olé Café brings a taste of Spain to the neighborhood

Aakanksha Agarwal August 12, 2019 Comments are off

Hola neighbors! There is a brand new cafe in Wallingford/Tangletown: Olé Café. What singles Olé Café out from the many coffee shops mushrooming all over the neighborhood is that it is the first Spanish-speaking only venue in Seattle; they are a café and tapas bar, serving a limited menu of authentic Spanish drinks and dishes; they also lead Spanish classes for adults inside the space through the owner, Amanda Reichert’s other company, Vámonos Spanish Center.

A native Seattleite, Amanda was drawn to the lyrical Spanish language when she was all of 12 years old and graduated …

New Italian Eatery Comes to Stone Way

A rustic Italian restaurant called Fiasco has recently opened in the neighborhood. Fiasco occupies the space that formerly housed Thackeray Café & Bar, and is owned by the same people, the guys behind Heavy restaurant group. While this street has pizza places and lots of pubs, people wanted a good Italian restaurant and Fiasco certainly delivers on that front. The restaurant has some delicious Italian-inspired food, with classic Italian dishes like spaghetti carbonara sharing menu space with PNW seafood specialties like fried calamari.

Takeout and catering is a big part of this new establishment. Some …

Chef Mutsuko Soma of Kamonegi, who bought artisanal Soba noodles to Wallingford, is all set to open a new sake bar named Hannyatou in the neighborhood. Hannyatou will occupy the space of the recently closed Lama G’s cafe, which is just two doors down from Kamonegi.

Sake options at Hannyatou

Along with being a chef and artisan soba maker, Soma is also a certified sake sommelier with certification from the Japan Sommelier Association, WSET. Says Soma, “There’s a long tradition of fermentation at the core of Japanese cuisine. At Hannyatou, we are excited to bring those fermentations to our community. …

A new addition to Wallingford’s wine scene

Aakanksha Agarwal July 26, 2018 3 Comments

Looking for a great wine tasting experience but not sure where to go? Look no farther than our neighborhood.

Claret, a new wine bar by the Heavy Restaurant Group, is here to make tipple time more exciting. Located at 3400 Stone Way N, the bar is cozy and inviting. Claret has a lot of gorgeous, natural light pouring in during the day. My husband and I went for a leisurely dinner and saw the bright restaurant change into a candlelit, intimate affair at night.

A fun thing is that the bar does half-pours, which means you can sample a lot …

Giddy up: Wallyburger turns one!

Aakanksha Agarwal July 16, 2018 Comments are off

The friendly neighborhood burger joint completes a year.

What do ‘Folsom Prison Bleu’ and ‘Chili Nelson’ have in common? Well, they immediately remind us of country music stalwarts Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. But they are also the names of delicious cheeseburgers at the friendly neighborhood burger joint, Wallyburger.

Wallyburger celebrated its very first birthday last month with what else, but a special out-of-the-menu burger – The Bacamole (House-made Guacamole, Bacon, ⅓ lb patty, Pepper Jack cheese, Lettuce). The restaurant is located at 1719 N 45th St, and while you must go there for the moreish burgers – you’ll find …

New Mexican Eatery Comes to Stone Way

Let’s taco about it!

Blinking neon lights announced a swanky new Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. With Super Bueno, seasoned (no pun there!) restaurateur Ethan Stowell added another feather to his cap. It is located on Stone Way, which has many American joints/bars which serve the odd tacos or poke bowl, but no proper restaurants with ethnic cuisines. My husband and I were pretty excited about this new place!

We started off with the blackened chicken and carne asada tacos. Heavy on the meat, with purple cabbage adding both color and crunch – the tacos had good flavor. The corn …

Wood art in the hood

The sun is out, and it’s a good time to pound the pavements and bask in the lovely weather while we can! If you, like me, enjoy walking all around our eclectic neighbourhood, you’d have noticed a beautiful carved tree trunk at 37th & Burke! When one of our editors tipped me off about this, it really piqued my curiosity. I set out to know more.

When I went to interview Neal Myerson at his yard, his story wasn’t quite what I expected. I’d assumed it was about keeping alive the heritage of a beloved family tree. But there was …
