Bike Share is Back!

DOUG. August 13, 2017 15 Comments

You’ve probably seen them by now, the bright green bikes and the bright orange bikes scattered randomly throughout Wallingford and other neighborhoods, signaling the return of bike share to Seattle. With the demise of Pronto earlier this year Seattle became the first American city with a failed bike share system. We are now getting a second chance with not just one, but with two new bike share systems: LimeBike (the green ones) and Spin  (the orange ones).

The biggest difference between these two new systems and Pronto is that Lime and Spin are “free-floating.” Bikes are self-locking and are not …

New Sidewalk and Bike Lane on Northlake Way

DOUG. May 27, 2017 10 Comments

If you’ve ever walked from Northlake Pizza or Voula’s Offshore Cafe to the University District on NE Northlake Way, you know that the two-block stretch west of the University Bridge is a nightmare for pedestrians. That is about to change.

Thanks to the Move Seattle levy (approved by Seattle voters in 2015), SDOT is currently installing three city blocks of sidewalk between 7th Ave NE and Eastlake Pl NE, two of which are on the north side of Northlake Way and the other on the south side. Additionally, the westbound bike lane on Northlake Way will be extended an extra …

45th and Woodlawn Project “Update”

DOUG. April 1, 2017 3 Comments

At this time of rapid growth and quick construction in Seattle, it seems strange that the project at 45th and Woodlawn, which Jordan reported on back in 2014, seems to be progressing at a snail’s pace. Anecdotally, I have seen very few workers at the construction site over the past month. Granted, I’m often walking by that location later in the afternoon or on weekends, but on the few weekdays I have walked by, there have been only a few workers in the pit and very little heavy machinery activity.

According to Seattle DPD, a building permit for the four-story …

Sirens Tonight.

DOUG. March 15, 2017 2 Comments

If you were wondering what all those sirens were about just after 10:00 tonight, so was I. Seattle’s Real Time 911 told me that there was a massive, multi-unit response to a fire in a single family residence on Bagley between 41st and 42nd. I rushed to check it out to find no fire, no smoke, but indeed a massive multi-unit response.

The scuttlebutt on the sidewalk was that the house was filled with smoke and 911 was called. Everyone appeared to be okay. I hope that is the case.…

Ice Age

DOUG. January 10, 2017 11 Comments

Strolling just beyond the northern border of Wallingford this weekend, I came across a man attempting to cross a frozen 250 foot span between two of the docks at the Green Lake Aqua Theater. He got about 30 feet out when his friend on the shore yelled, “What are you doing? Come back!” The man thought better of his traverse and returned to solid ground, though he defiantly declared, “I would have made it!”

As he walked past me I noticed he was well into his 50s, proving that the old adage “With age comes wisdom” is not necessarily universal.…

How Blue Are You, Wallingford?

DOUG. November 17, 2016 8 Comments

Inspired by Danny Westneat’s column in Tuesday’s Seattle Times, which sifted through results from the 2016 Presidential election and found a precinct in Wallingford that had exactly zero votes for Donald Trump, I decided to poke around the data myself and see just how blue all of Wallingford is. Unsurprisingly, we’re pretty blue.

Using what I consider to be the traditional and natural boundaries of Wallingford (yes, I know this is highly controversial) I looked at the results from the 29 voting precincts from Lake Union to 50th Street and I-5 to Aurora Avenue. I used the numbers …

Doug’s Voter’s Guide

DOUG. October 26, 2016 18 Comments

In this election season, perhaps the only thing lengthier and more ridiculous than the campaign for U.S. President was the ballot we residents in King County received. My ballot has 39 candidates and issues on which to vote, only four of which are uncontested. So if you were to spend just 10 short minutes (which really isn’t enough time) researching candidates and issues for the 35 contested races, you’d be mulling over your ballot for nearly six hours!

Fortunately you don’t have to. You have DOUG’S VOTER’S GUIDE.

This year the nation has been captivated and nauseated by the race …
