Hello! I am past president of the Wallingford Community Council and spent 13 years at Microsoft as a developer and manager, concurrent with Ballmer's reign. I helped renovate Meridian Playground and have guided several transportation and parks projects in the neighborhood. If you have a project in mind, the WCC is a great resource for figuring out how to make it happen!

HALA + The U-District Light Rail Upzone, a Preview for Wallingford

Eric July 15, 2015 85 Comments

The HALA rezone proposal has been all in the news since it was released on Monday and is city-wide. Here is the zoning change map, and here is that map overlaid in Google Maps. The key element of the plan is to expand urban villages and eliminate single family zoning near urban villages.

We’ve also been looking at the major U-District light rail upzone that will become reality this fall. Here is the 588 page Environmental Impact Statement for the upzone. Don’t want to read all 588 pages? A synopsis:

Existing zoning in the U-District maxes out at 8 stories…

Today: Urban Farms, Milk Carton Boats, Pharmaca Deals

Eric July 11, 2015 Comments are off

If there’s one day every year that’s “Wallingford Day”, that would be today. Here’s the line up:

10 to 4: Seattle Tilth’s Chicken Coop & Urban Farm Tour. If you’re at all interested in bees, goats, chickens, or just seeing cool stuff people build in their yards, this is a great event. I’ve been on the tour twice and gone on the tour twice. I’m always bummed when they schedule it the same day as the Wallingford parade / Mike Carton Derby.

11 to 12: The parade, followed by the festival-ish.

12 to 4: Pharmaca (a sponsor) is having a …

Wallingford Seafair/Kiddie/Family Parade, Saturday @11

Eric July 9, 2015 Comments are off

Our Seafair parade enters its 66th year with the theme “Route 66”. The drill teams are a lot of fun to watch. My daughter did drill team, so I went to ALL the parades (every weekend, all summer). Try to position yourself near the Wallingford Center, that’s where they perform for the judges. If you like it, check out the International District parade, as the Chinese drill team is amazing there (dragons and tight choreography with hundreds of kids).

For such a long tradition, the parade has been on shaky ground lately. At one time the parade was the main …

DADUs, Sheds, and Other Hot Tub –> Density Options

Eric July 8, 2015 16 Comments

Rodents killed our hot tub not once, but twice. Plywood isn’t enough to protect it; they like the warmth. In retrospect, we should have wrapped the base in galvanized wire mesh, but the tub came with the house and we were too lazy to hoist it out of the ground for retrofitting. Anyhow, thanks to craigslist, at least it’s gone (the power of “free!”) Now we have 240 volts sitting there plus a hole in our deck. What next?

Density of course! Seattle City Council preaches DADUs, or Detached Accessory Dwelling Units. You can install them if you have the …

Jean Godden Improves Move Seattle for Wallingford

Eric July 6, 2015 11 Comments

Remember the walking tour to fix the Move Seattle Levy? Well, it had an effect- Jean Godden added this requirement to the final Move Seattle Levy language:

Develop plans and complete improvements to enhance the NE 45th St Corridor for pedestrians and cyclists between 4th Ave NE and Brooklyn Ave NE by the time University Light Rail opens in 2021.

We went back and forth with her a few times on the language, as the initial amendment just asked for a study. Even the language above may be maneuvered around- it’s possible that SDOT will do something really lame like …

Wallingford Rail in Next Year’s Levy? Reply By July 8th!

Eric July 3, 2015 135 Comments

Did you know Sound Transit is thinking about running rail through Wallingford? Well, they never came to Wallingford to ask, but they are in fact planning it. Hell, I wouldn’t have known if Mike Ruby hadn’t told me, and he didn’t even know until a week and a half ago.

You might think “that’s nice, maybe I’ll use it”, but if you think that then you clearly don’t understand what adding light rail means. Light rail costs over a half billion dollars per mile, so the city completely rezones neighborhoods for density when adding it. The effect of “light” rail …

SPS Wonkathon Wrap Up: Professionalism and Priorities

Eric July 2, 2015 3 Comments

The SPS Wonkathon votes have been very one sided in favor of Rick Burke, so I’m going to compress the last two wonkathon posts into one here and eliminate the vote. When you have an imbalanced situation like this I don’t see a point in dragging things out.

I would like to thank both candidates for taking part, and I look forward to working with victor in the election to address issues with Seattle Public Schools going forward. Sherry Carr did a good job of bringing a level of professionalism to this unpaid position so I want to thank her …
