Hello! I am past president of the Wallingford Community Council and spent 13 years at Microsoft as a developer and manager, concurrent with Ballmer's reign. I helped renovate Meridian Playground and have guided several transportation and parks projects in the neighborhood. If you have a project in mind, the WCC is a great resource for figuring out how to make it happen!

SPS Wonkathon: School Reform and The Achievement Gap

Eric June 30, 2015 1 Comment

Today we cover a couple hot button education issues…

Wallyhood’s School Reform Question: There’s been obvious tension between the top-down, test-centered school reform movement and school teachers. School reformers argue that it is necessary to measure the effectiveness of teaching in order to achieve better outcomes. Teachers argue that tests are a poor measure of a teacher and that administration should be focused on supporting school communities instead of passing judgment on them.

How do you plan to navigate this rift, and what path do you see for improving schools without alienating teachers?

Rick: As the husband of a teacher, …

SPS Wonkathon: School Assignments and Capacity Issues

Eric June 29, 2015 4 Comments

Welcome to Wallingford’s Seattle Public Schools Wonkathon, running Monday to Thursday this week! Sherry Carr is retiring from the School Board, so our area is up for a new District 2 representative, with Rick Burke and Laura Obara Gramer running for the seat.

SPS buildings are funded by two alternating 6 year long levies that are spaced 3 years apart for renewal. We are currently a couple years into the BEX IV levy, with the BTA III levy to be renewed as BTA IV in a 2016 vote. Of local interest, BEX IV paid for Green Lake Elementary’s great new …

Internet Options in Wallingford, Cheap and Otherwise

Eric June 27, 2015 20 Comments

A little known erstwhile awesome thing in Wallingford is that Interconnection offered $80 per year broadband via Clear wimax to anyone with a student in the house, meaning if you had a kid in school you qualified. Yes, no need to be poor, you get semi-broadband Internet for less than $7 per month! Yeah, only about 3 MBPS, but still, $7! Fortunately, it’s not too late to switch to far more superior options such as compareyourbusinesscosts.co.uk/.

Well, the cheap times end in November. Sprint bought Clear and stabbed wimax through its sputtering heart. There’s still cheap options out there, …

Wallyhood Calendar: Free Zoo, Free Movies, Free Cars

Eric June 26, 2015 26 Comments

Free Zoo Tonight at 6:30: The zoo does an annual neighborhood appreciation thing, just show up at 6:30 at the West Plaza on Phinney Ave. N. between N. 55th & N. 56th Sts. Chat with your neighbors, enjoy ice cream, and hang out with the zoo’s new maned wolves. There’s no residency check, parking is free, so bring anyone you like.

Unfortunately, the new, fancy, 15 million dollar “Banyan Wilds” exhibit will not be open to you. Apparently the new animals there are still getting acclimated and they don’t want to stress them with night time visitors yet.…

NATCO next to Olympic & Drum Exchange Is No More

Eric June 23, 2015 14 Comments

The NATCO mailbox/shipping store behind Olympia Pizza is now vacant with a “For Lease: 206-595-5752” sign in the window. George wrote the following to his mailbox holders last month when his lease could not be renewed: To all mailbox holders, I had the pleasure of serving you all these years. However, I am retiring due to a family emergency and my age, 71 years. We had someone who was going to assume our business to insure the continuity of your address at this location but the landlord refused to sign a new lease with him and informed me just end…

N Northlake Way at Stone to be Reconfigured This Fall

Eric June 21, 2015 10 Comments

The city announced that the reconfiguration of N Northlake Way at Stone Way N now has a contractor and will get built this this fall. It’s a project I worked on with the WCC last year, so I have some attachment to it. It seemed like a straight win-win to us all.

From the City:

This project will construct the following changes at this intersection:

A new sidewalk on the west side of Stone Way N, south of N 34th Street A new sidewalk on the south side of N Northlake Way at Waterway 22 A new striped crosswalk on…

Bedrooms and More Ground Breaking on June 28th

Eric June 20, 2015 19 Comments

Jeff from Bedrooms and More says:

It has been a long time coming. Five years and now we break ground. We will be having a ceremonial groundbreaking on Sunday, June 28th with the official bulldozing starting on the 29th.

Construction will pose challenges, both for us and neighbors. We will attempt, to our best ability, to make everything go as smoothly as possible but there may be inconveniences. Our plan is to have a building that all of Wallingford can be proud of and be a true “Gateway to Wallingford”.
