Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

60 Second Interview! – Michelle Quesada

Helen December 10, 2011 Comments are off

Build a deeper knowledge of yet another inspired Wallyhood sponsor!

Michelle Quesada, Architect:

Where are you from? – A global village.  I was born in Houston.  The family was living in Venezuela at the time.  I grew up in developing nations.  I have called Seattle home for over 30 years.

What’s the secret of your success? – Listening and cultivating a collaborative approach.  Architecture is a process, made richer by conversation and inclusion.

What do you like best about Wallingford? – Our awareness of community.  Most folks here participate in some way in the neighborhood, whether it is leading a …

For the Love of Pete

Helen September 26, 2011 Comments are off

A guy walks through QFC parking lot with a pair of matching brown Boxer dogs, one has its hind legs in a wheeled contraption that rolls along, the other does not.

Inside QFC I notice more of this summer’s new fashion, floor-length slinky sundresses.  The middle-aged woman in me approves, it’s attractive but covers a lot.

At the intersection of Wallingford and 45th a woman scampers across as the light is changing to red, while her male companion refuses to follow her.  He calls across, “You go ahead, I’ll catch up”.  Is he being sarcastic?  She hesitates on the other …

Don’t Throw That Out!

Helen September 24, 2011 9 Comments

Inevitably, you get to an age where some of your possessions are older than grown adults walking around who weren’t even born when you bought them.  This sad situation occurred recently in our house with my husband’s pajamas.  Yes, he loves them, but, yes, they were purchased in the late 1980’s, which not only makes them old enough to vote, but also serve in the military and drink alcohol.  They had to go.

Now, in these days of environmental awareness I think twice about simply chucking things into the garbage (landfill).  After the wonderful new pajamas were acquired with great …

Word from Cat

Helen September 16, 2011 6 Comments

A reader wrote in about bumping into Real Change vendor Cat outside the PCC in Fremont and asked us follow up with her about where she’s been recently, and why she’s left her spot in front of Bartell Drugs. Cat sent us an update providing insight into the jockeying for locations which goes on among our street community:

To answer your query as to why I moved my selling location from the Wallingford Bartell’s [sic] to the Fremont PCC  I will do my best to try to explain it. Let me start by telling you what reasons were NOT a …

Hide ‘n Seek

This sounds like good clean neighborly fun:

‘Hood Hunts will be in “mid” Wallingford (40th to 45th St.) on Wed. July 20th at 6 PM.  Meet at the NW corner of Wallingford Playfield, with a copy of the map and clues from their site and go on a scavenger hunt.  The 20 checkpoints cover about 1/2 square mile.  Hang out at the Blue Star Cafe afterwards for food and conversation.

Patrick Nuss, the organizer of ‘Hood Hunts explains:

We’ve done 15 of these events so far since October, each in a different neighborhood. It started mostly with a group …

Eat the Sun!

Helen May 4, 2011 1 Comment

Craving a closer relationship with this elusive object, I recently picked up Richard Cohen’s Chasing the Sun: The Epic Story of the Star That Gives Us Life.  It explains how life on earth depends on the ability of green plants to harness the energy of the sun, thus making almost all other living things plant parasites (the only exception being deep-sea life near thermal vents but this still requires oxygen created by plants on the surface and you don’t want to hang out with these guys anyway).

Which is a long prelude to saying that Seattle Tilth‘s annual Edible …

60 Second Interview! – Jay Farias

Helen April 29, 2011 Comments are off

Pull up a bar stool and take a minute to get to know another wonderful Wallyhood sponsor:

Jay Farias, Proprietor of Bandolero:

Where are you from? – Dartmouth, Massachusetts. I moved here in 1991.

What’s the secret of your success? – I’m not successful yet!  But the secret to success is hard work, diligence and stick-to-it-iveness.  You can’t give up because the restaurant business is a roller-coaster ride.  You have to serve a good quality product with a friendly staff.  People have to be happy that they’re working here.

What do you like best about Wallingford? – There’s a big …
