Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Can You Spare a (Free) Dime?

This arrived in our Wallyhood inbox some weeks ago and it was so lovely we had to share:

Hello,

While waiting at the 45th street crosswalk in front of QFC Saturday, an elderly man asked me to look at the curb that separates the QFC parking lot from the sidewalk.

That started a lengthy, disjointed, yet still interesting, trail of stories.  They ranged from someone tearing his shirts in the laundry room where he lives, to his Dad being a cop in the ‘hood, to his travels as a pilot in the Navy — and much more.

Sadly, I didn’t …

Let’s Make A Deal with Greenlake Moms

Helen September 29, 2010 1 Comment

Have you seen those Daily Deal junkies?  Are you, in fact, secretly one?

I used one recently to get a haircut (paying a lot for haircuts is a pet peeve) and the stylist said a huge wave of people cashing it in had come through, all opening up about their deep obsession with getting deals (psychiatrists should do double duty as hairdressers).

Well, a very local outlet for those outrageously discounted, virtually irresistible bargains has opened under the aegis of the most successful neighborhood Yahoo Group ever, Greenlake Moms.  This is from founder Melissa Benaroya’s official announcement:

I was approached …

Up and Down Night on “The Town”

Helen September 24, 2010 1 Comment

Audiences at the Guild 45th had mixed reactions to Ben Affleck’s second stint behind the camera in another Boston crime flick, The Town.  (On the plus side, from Wallyhood’s perspective, it does have guys dressed as nuns):

“Overall really good.  We’re from Boston.  They toned down the accent from real life.  The authenticity was right on.  That’s Charlestown trash for you.” – Steve & Lindsay

“Good movie.  It kept me entertained.  But Hollywood-esque.  Ben Affleck’s character was good.  Overall thumbs up.” – Yori

“Standard action flick.  Entertaining.” – Kelly

“Good.  Well-acted and well-written.  Surprisingly, the reviews were right.  Ben …

Library “Sugar Daddy” Sweetens the Pot

Helen September 23, 2010 3 Comments

Exciting news from the Seattle Public Library Foundation:

Today we are announcing that an anonymous donor has pledged $500,000 to The Seattle Public Library Foundation if we can raise a matching amount through community contributions.  . . . .

The anonymous donor was especially concerned about how budget cuts would impact the community, in particular children and families who rely on Seattle’s public libraries for so much.   . . . .

Our goal is to raise $500,000 to match the gift by December 31, 2010, so we can make those dollars available for Seattle’s public libraries to use by 2011…

Sculpture Grove in Woodland Park

Helen September 21, 2010 5 Comments

Cool, cloudy Labor Day and our family is on a “nature hike” in Woodland Park (yes, we like to take it easy).

Underneath a very large, wide tree just uphill from the main parking lot we stumbled upon a secret sculpture garden built from broken branches and twigs simply arranged by balancing and leaning against each other and the tree.

The beauty and ingenuity of this is breathtaking.

It is as if a tribe of wood elves has crept in during the night.  Except I know it’s not magic, but ordinary people like us making art out of what we …

My Neighbor’s Electric Ride

Helen September 19, 2010 10 Comments

Ever wondered what it’s like to plug in instead of gassing up?

Recently while snooping around, I saw a snazzy little blue vehicle parked across the street.  Looking more closely, I realized it was a snazzy little blue electric vehicle.

My neighbor Dave is its owner.  Here’s his story:

We’ve known the folks at MC Electric where we bought the car for over five years.  I approached them as a possible sponsor for the Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility Annual Dinner in support of our sustainable environment agenda and they brought a car to the dinner event on three different …
