Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Lock Up Yer Ladders!

Helen September 17, 2010 2 Comments

An anonymous Wallyhood tipster sent this advice for discouraging those around the neighborhood with an underdeveloped sense of respect for other people’s personal property:

The first Police Notes item in today’s the Herald-Outlook concerns a ladder that was left outside and then used by criminals to climb in an open 2nd story window at a nearby home.

Folks, please, please put your ladders away inside your basement or garage at the end of the workday.  If you can’t do that, then use a heavy chain lock to attach it to a fence or something else that is sturdy.  Think how …

The Wurst Is Yet to Come . . .

Helen September 14, 2010 20 Comments

Ah, the Wallingford Wurst Festival.  What a grand old tradition.  It is the best of times, it is the Wurst of times, you could say.

This year, the Festival will be Friday, Sept. 17th, 4 PM – 10 PM and Saturday, Sept. 18th, 10 AM – 10 PM in the playground and building of St. Benedict School.  They are in their 28th year of housing Festivals and no Wurst for wear.

What’s the Wurst that can happen?

Food!  Wursts of course!  With sauerkraut!  If this gives your arteries a turn for the Wurst, you can opt for grilled salmon, pasta…

Oddities Along Wallingford Ave.

Helen September 11, 2010 2 Comments

Unquestionably the strangest item I have ever seen put out for free on the curb.  A box decorated like a giant red dice.  My mind boggles at the motivation for creating it and the use its future owner will put it to.  I don’t question that it will soon have a future owner.

The easy way to exercise your dog.  Leash it to your bike and go for a ride.

Welcome back wacky, wonderful Wallingford wurst wizard!

Whole lotta stickers goin’ on.

Shame he’s handicapped but remarkable that he’s learned how to drive.

The Books Are Being Liberated on Tuesday!

Helen September 6, 2010 2 Comments

Did you encounter this disheartening sight outside the Library last week as you eagerly approached to pick up that really juicy read waiting for you on hold or to restock your supply of DVD’s and CD’s?

Well, the wait is almost over as the Library furlough will end this Tuesday, September 7th.  Hours on Tuesdays are 1PM to 8 PM and you have permission to give your favorite librarian a little hug as they open the doors.

Double (and Triple and Quadruple) Vision

Helen September 4, 2010 1 Comment

On Woodlawn next to the library, a couple with snazzy matching bicycles.

Three huge wolf-dogs sprawl on the sidewalk outside the Sock Monster.

I bought these two ears of corn at the Farmers Market and was given this 2 dollar bill in change.  This afternoon is becoming uncanny.

These adorable twin girls and their proud parents are also at the Farmers Market.  Yes, the babies are identical.

Four exuberant belly dancers swirl and pose outside Pharmaca in the northwest corner of the Wallingford Center.

Celebrate the Harvest with Tilth

Helen September 1, 2010 1 Comment

“whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7)

And if he soweth green beans, cherry tomatoes and zucchini in Seattle, then it’s time to reap and celebrate!

Seattle Tilth’s annual Harvest Fair will be Saturday, September 11th from 10 AM to 5 PM in the picnic shelter and lawns behind the Good Shepherd Center.  (That’s right, on 9/11.  Let’s try to affirm life and counterbalance the sadness of the anniversary).

Have some old-fashioned fun while learning something new at Seattle’s city farm fest!  Workshop topics include:  foraging, turning your lawn into a veggie garden, winter gardening, fermenting …
