Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

60 Second Interview! – Jen Koogler

Helen April 8, 2011 Comments are off

Lights!  Camera!  Action!  Here’s another snapshot of one of our great Wallyhood sponsors.

Jen Koogler, Marketing Coordinator at Scarecrow Video:

Where are you from? – From here.  I grew up in Renton.

What’s the secret of your success? – Our vast inventory of films and our commitment as a staff to sharing that and promoting our love of cinema to Seattle.

What do you like best about Wallingford? – It’s large and not as physically close-knit as some other neighborhoods but it’s got a nice neighborhood feel to it and sense of community.  It’s nice to know that people in …

Mighty (Food Network) – O!

Gourmet . . . donuts?  You better believe it!

The Food Network Challenge has selected another neighborhood eatery for its show, Tangletown’s Mighty-O Donuts.  The episode airs Sunday, April 10th at 8 PM.

An enthusiastic donut-eater myself, I caught up with Mighty-O’s competitor, “donut creator extraordinaire” Sara Beth Russert.

I know you aren’t supposed to give away the ending, but what was the challenge?

We had to make several different kinds of donuts and create a showpiece, a giant donut sculpture.  I kept mine – it will be on display in the cafe after the episode airs.

What was …

Growing “Your Farm in the City”

Helen March 29, 2011 Comments are off

Imagine acquiring the power to produce your own food.  Boom! Veggies over here.  Bam! Herbs over there.  Wham! Strawberries!  Zap! Fresh-laid eggs, coming right up!

Most city-livers are so distant from the sources of what they eat that this seems like magic.  But in her new book Your Farm in the City, Lisa Taylor of Seattle Tilth explains that starting an urban farm is no mystery, but rather something deeply satisfying that we can all do.  Meet Lisa, learn about the book and get a signed copy this Thursday, March 31st at 7 PM at the offices of Tilth in …

60-Second Interview! – Greg Martin

Helen March 25, 2011 3 Comments

Wallyhood’s sponsors are sweet and neat.  Here’s a quick snapshot of another one.

Greg Martin, Assistant Head Instructor at School of Oom Yung Doe (hefting a Chinese long staff with broadsword, don’t try this at home):

Where are you from? – I was born in Redmond and was raised in Kirkland where I still live

What’s the secret of your success? – Connection with the community.  We’ve had over 100 community events like women’s self-defense workshops and stress-relief workshops.  We’ve worked with local schools, especially Hamilton, teaching free after-school lessons.  I was Volunteer of the Year at the YMCA and …

Not Exactly “The Happy Ones”

Helen March 24, 2011 1 Comment

Here’s my quick thumbs-up versus thumbs-down rundown for Green Lake’s Bathhouse Theater’s current production of “The Happy Ones”: Ah, Southern California in the ’70.  Even if I wasn’t there, I watched it on The Brady Bunch and that was the life The soundtrack to The Big Chill is my favorite Fun-lovin’, outspoken leading lady in tall leather boots?  Groovy! Not at all happy.  Sad.  Too, too sad I have no nostalgia for the ’70’s.  The ’70’s are over-rated Eh, California – who needs it?

I have to confess to growing up in Southern California in the 1970’s.  In a ranch …

Catherine

Helen March 20, 2011 5 Comments

Location?:  Outside of Bartell Drugs on 45th St.

What is your name?:  Catherine or Cat

Where are you from?:  San Francisco, but moved to Seattle in Third Grade.  I’ve been homeless on and off my whole adult life.

What do you think of the neighborhood?:  I like Wallingford.  The people are friendly.  They have enough money to buy the paper but they don’t have so much money that they’re snobs.

Favorite Wallingford moment?:  I meet people I wouldn’t ordinarily meet, it’s been a real blessing, the interaction with people in my daily life.  I met …

Wallingford’s Most Wanted

Helen March 19, 2011 Comments are off

Sometimes, Wallyhood provides a place for readers to do a bit of community policing in its Forums and Comments.  So, to be safer and better-informed, read on:

A rash of plant poisonings and uprootings.  Got any leads?  Have your plants been damaged?  Ideas about why someone would target such helpless and innocent victims? How safe is Wallingford for single, female residents?, asks a potential newcomer from the Eastside.  Got any input or experiences? The ever-contentious debate over removing signs from telephone poles rolls along.  Explore this unusual controversy for yourself, you’ll never look at a pole the same way again.…
