Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Between The Sheets! (in the Library)

Got your attention, didn’t I?  Well, this will be fun, though not quite as fun as the title.

Almost every book we read in our house (and, let me tell you, we are voracious readers) comes from the library to which we make a generous annual contribution – and so should YOU!.  We visit daily – so the reduction in hours was a shock and  it inspired me to put together this tribute to the underappreciated Wallingford branch library:

Your Helpful Wallingford Library Staff: (left-to-right) Jessica, Christine (4½ yrs.), Stacey (10 yrs.), Carrie (4½ yrs., 33 yrs. at SPL!), …

The Purple Prose or “The Violet Hour”

Polonius:  What do you read, my lord?

Hamlet:  Words, words, words.

Hamlet (II, ii, 191-192)

Presuming that not all forms of entertainment suit all audiences, I have condensed my review of The Violet Hour, playing at the Bathhouse Theater from Jan 29 to Feb 21, into this handy summary.

The Venue: Venture forth from Wallingford to our fair neighbor, Green Lake, and its modest but pleasant Bathhouse Theater located on the northwest-ish lake shore.  Enjoy the ample free parking and intimate (tiny) lobby.  If time allows, a stroll along the lake is a salutary pre-curtain activity.

Thumbs Up: If …

Hard Times Hit Library (Again)

Helen February 1, 2010 6 Comments

Been to the library lately?  There’s an ominous new sign on the door:

Yep, 15 branches of the Seattle Public Library, including our humble yet beloved Wallingford branch, have been forced to reduce hours starting Wednesday Feb. 3rd due to $1.7 million in budget cuts.  So books can now only be had on:

Monday, Tuesday 1-8 PM

Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 11-6

CLOSED Friday and Sunday

Sigh.  You need to trek on over to Greenwood, Northeast or Ballard the rest of the time.

All the gory details at the SPL web site.…

Cookin’ Up Community

Helen January 26, 2010 Comments are off

(Wallyhood welcomes our newest writer, Helen Kim, reporting on last week’s Wallingford Community Kitchen. Slideshow photos by Matt Mason.)

Imagine being a member of a big extended family. Big. Really big. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, teenagers, even an adorable little baby. All cooking a big meal together. Now, imagine the residents of Wallingford as the members of that family in the kitchen of the Good Shepherd’s Senior Center. This was the scene at the Community Kitchen I attended on Friday night.

About 30 of us gathered to prepare Beef Stew, Roasted Vegetable Lasagna and Root Vegetable Stew with everyone contributing ingredients, …
