Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Heavy Metal

Most impressively-equipped motorcycle I’ve ever seen – outside Essential Bakery.

Formidable iron gate.

It looks like there’s a bird in there, but it’s fake.

Was this metal door inside someone’s house?  Where??

A Mixed Bag

Helen March 5, 2011 27 Comments

This is what I aspire to be – a little old lady with a trash grabber, shopping bag and really colorful shoes.

Great combination of winter coat, shorts and flip-flops.

One of those sunny, breezy, cloudy, rainy, sleety days.  Early spring.

Snippets

Helen February 28, 2011 4 Comments

Gorgeous, sunny Sunday morning at Green Lake.  Snippets of conversation overheard while walking around in the opposite direction to most people: “I make a ton of chicken nuggets, when I make chicken nuggets” “Remember that movie The Turning Point with Mikhail Baryshnikov?” “I can’t sit down and focus on anything for any length of time” “She drinks several large mochas a day” “He’s always dated white women.”  – “I know” (mutter)  – “Okay, that is NOT TRUE!”
I tell ya, 75% of the people I work with have ADHD” (is this the same person who can’t focus?)
“He started relationships …

Envy

Helen February 27, 2011 23 Comments

As one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Envy seems middling.  Worse than Gluttony or Sloth but not as bad as Wrath or Greed.

I was in Fremont the other day and experienced a pang of Envy.  Over a cute, new little pie shop.  The pies were little and the shop was little and the whole thing was shiny new and super cute.  The thought crossed my mind, “Why don’t we have one of these in Wallingford?”.  Some time later I stumbled across another gorgeous new place there with organic/sustainable sandwiches all done up in blond wood and big chalked-up menus.  …

Sweet “Cedar Rapids”

Helen February 26, 2011 7 Comments

There’s a type of movie we’re pretty familiar with.  It’s set in a small town and is full of local oddballs who do wacky things but have hearts of gold.  It’s easy for these movies to get condescending and make fun of its characters.  What’s refreshing about Cedar Rapids, the new comedy at The Guild, is that it follows the formula but with affection and respect.

As you can guess from its name Cedar Rapids is set in the the down-to-earth, American-car-driving, nasally-vowelled, sensibly-shod, cholesterol-consuming, beer-drinking, unbelievably-cold-wintered, practical, comfortable, and unpretentious upper Midwest.  Believe me, as one who used …

For the Love of Math!

Helen February 24, 2011 Comments are off

You’ve heard this a million (10 to the power of 6) times, but it is frightening.  In the 2009 (41 X 49)  Program for International Student Assessment US 15-year-olds ranked 25th (4! + 1) among 34 (square root of 1156) countries in math falling behind Canada, New Zealand, Finland, and Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

To counter this sad trend, stop by The Math Salon at Mosaic Coffeehouse on February 28th from 4-6 PM:

The Math Salon is an opportunity for everyone – children, adults, families, teachers – to come together and play …
