Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Gimme Some Pancakes!

Helen February 23, 2011 Comments are off

Yes!  The Wallingford Community Senior Center is going back to holding its popular Sunday Pancake Breakfast quarterly.  Okay, it’s not as good as being able to stuff yourself with homemade pancakes and French toast for a good cause every month, but it’s a start!

The next one is February 27th from 9 AM to 12 PM in the basement of the Good Shepherd Center.  Adults only $5 and Kids $2.50.  Just follow your nose.

Love Thy Neighbors

This Saturday, February 12th, is Neighbor Appreciation Day:

February 12, 2011 will mark Seattle’s 17th annual celebration of Neighbor Appreciation Day. It’s the day when we reach out, create new bonds, and express thanks to those who live or work around us. The celebration began in 1995 when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate “a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other.” Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed the Saturday before Valentine’s Day as Neighbor Appreciation Day. The observance has grown every year since.  …

Color My World

Helen February 6, 2011 1 Comment

All right, ladies, who are you rooting for?  Steelers?  . . . . or Packers?

On the side of the Wells Fargo Building on Densmore Ave. N.  A study in shades?  Picking new paint colors?

Cute, and disturbing at the same time.  At the corner of Wallingford Ave. N. and 45th.

Found an abandoned shopping cart here and decided to wheel it back to QFC.  Interesting how your resemblance to a homeless person increases in proportion to your distance from a grocery store (especially laden down with library books, backpack, shopping bags, etc.).

The first crocuses!  Who are they rooting …

My Wonderful Evening at ‘My Wonderful Day’

Helen February 1, 2011 3 Comments

In these gloomy days of late winter, sometimes a good belly laugh is exactly what you need.  And who better than an English writer to show the hilariousness of people going nuts in a repressive society and a damp climate?

With that, here are my quick “pros vs. cons” of Green Lake’s Bathhouse Theater‘s latest production, My Wonderful Day, by Alan Ayckbourn:

Cons

I don’t pay good money to see the gut of a middle-aged man on stage.  Especially wearing superhero underpants Language, my dear, language I’m too sophisticated to enjoy broad slapstick comedy.  Really, I am
