Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Warm and Bright

An old-fashioned ladies knitting circle outside Bad Woman Yard in the Wallingford Center!

In no particular order, they are:  Allie (scarf), Rebecca (scarf), Erin (fabulous hat – her words), Sam (neck cozy), Joanne (hat), Becky (shawl), and Missy (scarf and hat).

They’re the Newbie Knitters and gather here every other Sunday (contact Becky (shawl) at meetup.com to join).  Cozy, eh?

This full-body rain protection makes a lot of sense lately.  Especially given the Wet Floor sign in Bartell’s.  I want a set.

Hello John and …

Satay . . . Slightly Delayed

Helen December 11, 2010 10 Comments

It was a tough job but someone had to do it.

Yesterday I got the call on my Wallyhood bat-phone that Satay (1711 N. 45th St.) had opened and someone had to go over there for lunch and get pictures.  Not one to balk at a challenge, I grabbed my trusty little Canon and headed down 45th Street . . .

Peter, a co-owner, greeted me at the cash register.  The menu is simple:  four types of satay, three “dishes” (wok-fried yellow noodles, spicy noodle soup and red curry) and three sides, all ranging from $2.50 to $10.95.

He recommended …

Wallingford ROCKS The Best of 2010

Helen December 4, 2010 1 Comment

Can you believe that six Wallingford businesses won in Seattle Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Best of 2010?

Without further ado . . . here they are!:

Jen, Co-Owner, Izilla Toys What is the secret to your success? – “Trusting our instincts to buy the toys that are really truly engaging, and endeavoring to be part of our communities.” What is your favorite thing about Wallingford? – “I like that it is so walkable, so much like an urban village.  I feel like I can get almost everything I need to get done here, it’s got schools, drug stores, really a whole…

Support Businesses to Support Seniors

Helen November 30, 2010 Comments are off

It seems odd to me to hear seniors being called a “special interest group”.  Because if you think about it, it’s only a matter of time until we all become seniors (if we’re lucky).

Bearing that in mind, the Wallingford Community Senior Center needs your help.  Earlier this year an anonymous donor put up a $25,000 matching grant to help keep the struggling organization going and last I heard they still need $7,000 to get the full amount.

The following businesses have stepped up to help by offering to donate 1%-5% of their sales to the cause on Sunday, December …

Essential Lunch

Helen November 30, 2010 10 Comments

A tribute to some women of Wallingford observed during lunch at the Essential Bakery:

Pretty but faded
Late middle-age settles in
Blonde, blue-eyed beauty

–

Substantial as stone
But sweet inside, stout and sweet
As your big sister

–

Mom with little boy
Thin, tired, doing too much
Sit, put your feet up

–

Calm, leisurely lunch
Sit alone with newspaper
Life’s work done, relax

–

(and me:)

Small, anxious, scribbling
What’s in the notebook, missy?
Blush – it’s about you.
