Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Leaves, Leaves Everywhere

The problem with Fall is, well . . . leaves fall.

The helpful folks at Seattle Public Utilities are making this disturbing phenomenon easier to cope with, according to Wallyhood reader Alan, with two programs.

Firstly, in the month of November they will pick up extra yard waste bags at no charge, giving you no excuse to not get out there and rake them up.

They also urge you to keep an eye on your nearby gutters where they can drift and clog the openings.  The combination of a wet-leaf plug and heavy rain is not pretty!  If you want …

Odd Treats

Did you know Kris Kringle lives in Wallingford?

He’s my neighbor Dick (Kris Kringle isn’t actually his name) who’s such an expert gardener that he confidently picks and eats wild mushrooms.  These are Birch boletes growing near the roots of a birch in the traffic circle.  He says they taste like Shiitakes.  (NOTE:  DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF AND POISON YOURSELF AND BLAME US).

Dick’s house is on the corner behind him and his garden fills every inch of space along the sidewalk on 46th with raspberries, tomatoes and even a grape arbor.  It’s the most productive home garden I’ve …

Throw Down: Who Can Grow the Most Awesome Moustache?

Helen November 6, 2010 4 Comments

The other day, someone in the Wallyhood home office (okay, there really is no home office) pointed out this article about growing a moustache in November.

This set off an idle train of thought about how handsome moustaches look on some guys.  To wit:

(Okay, the last one, not so much.)  Still the vision of a Wallingford peopled with newly-moustached guys was enticing, so I contacted Spin the neighborhood barber who is promoting the event to ask what we at Wallyhood could do to make this vision a reality.

Spin stepped up to the plate and offered a free haircut…

Splendor in November

I sincerely wish I knew more about trees to identify these.  Readers, could you help?

A final blaze of light before the darkness settles in . . .

Sunflower thrown in for good measure.

Wallybits, Delicious and Nutritious

Helen November 5, 2010 6 Comments

We at Wallyhood have cooked up a new regular feature called Wallybits where we serve up little tasty nuggets of news that aren’t big enough for a main course.  So, without further ado, here are the early-November Wallybits.  Bon appetit!: A reader Sarah writes:  “an artist/trick-or-treater left behind a big portfolio of their work on our porch last night.  The name on the front reads:  ‘Peter Bauer.’  I’d love to reunite the lost works with their owner.” Peter Bauer, are you out there? “Bartell Drugs is once again partnering with the Salvation Army to help bring holiday cheer to …

Et Tu, Forums?

Helen November 3, 2010 Comments are off

Okay, ours might not be as impressive as the Roman Forum, but we welcome you to participate in our venues for Wallingford discussion (check your sword at the door). Got a neighborhood restaurant experience you want to tell about?  Did you know Wallyhood has a place to rate and post reviews?  There are also links to articles and reviews.  Let the feasting begin! The new white LED streetlamps drew a lot of discussion from nocturnal types, in both the forums and comments on Wallyhood’s informative post.  Are you cringing from the glare, or basking in the glow? Finally, local dope…

Kickin’ Around Keystone

Jailbreak!  Chickens on the loose!  In the raised bed nibbling on garden greens.

Seattle early-fall specialty.  Green tomatoes.  (Can you spot more chickens behind?).

This is exactly what my daughter would look like if she met the Medusa and turned into stone.

Free firewood.  Must have chain saw.
