Library Resumes Normal Hours

Jack December 7, 2021 1 Comment

Since the start of the pandemic, most Seattle Public Library branches have offered limited services or been closed outright. It was only last September that our neighborhood branch partially reopened. Jason Davis, Temporary Supervising Librarian of the Wallingford branch, now informs us that, beginning this week, the branch will resume normal hours. These are: Mondays and Tuesdays 1pm to 8pm Wednesdays and Thursdays 11am to 6pm Off on Fridays Sundays noon to 5pm

In addition, the exterior book drop is now open 24/7. No more excuses for not returning your borrowed items!…

Oceans of Emotion at Sewer Project Site

Jack October 19, 2021 2 Comments

No, people aren’t getting all worked up over Seattle Public Utility’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project. Oceans of Emotion is, in fact, the newest art installation to decorate the work site. (A previous art work heralded the start of the project.)

The goal of the project, which extends from Ballard on the west end of site to Wallingford on the east end, is to provide temporary storage space for runoff and sewerage during times of heavy rainfall when treatment plants cannot handle the load. Many more details are available here.

The creators of Oceans of Emotion are Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson …

NHL Expansion Draft to Be Held at Gas Works

Jack July 20, 2021 Comments are off

For those not entirely in the know as regards the doings of the National Hockey League during the height of the summer, the league will be holding an “expansion draft” this Wednesday. This is to allow the league’s newest team, our Seattle Kraken, to acquire a roster of players for the upcoming season. The Kraken will be allowed to select one player from each existing team within the limits of various and sundry league rules.

The event will be held onstage at Gas Works Park from about 3 to 8 pm this Wednesday, July 21, and roughly 4,000 fans …

Ship Canal Water Quality Project Continues

Jack June 11, 2021 4 Comments

If you’ve walked or driven along 35th St. towards Stone Way, you may have wondered what is going on just north of the transfer station at 35th and Interlake. That site is the location of the eastern terminus of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project which I wrote about here back in January of 2020. The overall goal is to reduce sewage overflows into the ship canal during times of heavy rain by providing a very temporary storage location for that water: a big tunnel running underground from Wallingford to Ballard. That tunnel, and its attendant pumping stations and other…

Free Little Art Gallery

Jack May 25, 2021 2 Comments

Our neighborhood now has its own Free Little Art Gallery. Similar to the many “little free libraries” that dot our sidewalks, the concept is to take a piece and, if possible, leave a piece.

An anonymous reader wrote to us to say:

I thought I would share our neighborhood FLAG_Wallingford which opened its mini art gallery on February 24th 2021. It is located on the corner of N 45th and Whitman.

This gallery accepts small artwork to share with folks that walk by for free. You do not have to leave a piece in order to take one that speaks …

Jack May 20, 2021 4 Comments

Neighbors living near Green Lake have endured several months of street realignments, curbing improvements, repaving and lane restriping. Now, an end is finally in sight. And in another news item from SDOT, West Green Lake Way will remain shut to cars for the foreseeable future. East Green Lake Way Improvements

A recent email from SDOT announced:

Changes Coming to 34th Street

Jack May 8, 2021 Comments are off

Work may begin as soon as May 10 to change the layout of 34th Street between Stone Way and Fremont Ave. (See maps detailing closures and detours at the bottom of this article.) While not in Wallingford strictly speaking, neighbors may be affected even though the work will take place at night.

Darrell Bulmer from SDOT writes:

Starting as early as May 10, we will be changing the layout of the road along N 34th St from Fremont Ave N to Stone Way N. The work will take place overnight and will involve the removal of existing road …
