Wallingford neighbor Bridget Culligan writes to say that Art in Bloom, a local garden art and studio tour turned, this year due to Covid, to yard tour, is back for its seventh year. Bridget is also a featured artist and studio owner. Dates: April 24-25, 2021 Time: 10am to 5pm

Wallyhood: Another New Beginning

Jack March 3, 2021 3 Comments

You may have seen a few posts trickling out here at Wallyhood like flowers popping up in the Spring. Yes, after a long 2020 and a long winter, we are trying to emerge from our hibernation. A reopening is afoot!

As with so many organizations, COVID-19 dealt a blow to us, as stay-at-home orders and closed schools placed new burdens on many of us. I tried to keep the lights on throughout 2020, but it was never my wish to run this blog by myself. I thought I was saying goodbye in this post, and Jordan followed up with his …

What Happened to Wallyhood?

Jack August 19, 2020 11 Comments

COVID-19, with its attendant school closures and stay-at-home orders, has had a dramatic effect on all of our lives. Some people have way more time on their hands than ever before; some have way less. Here at Wallyhood, we’ve struggled to keep going. Ben furloughed himself several months ago; Jordan, the founder of Wallyhood, has moved away, though he continues to be in touch now and then. Katy is contributing when possible.

I’ve tried to maintain a minimal level of service to you, our readers, since March by answering email, publishing the few stories that came in from our writers, …

Part of 45th St. to Close Over Weekend

Jack July 17, 2020 1 Comment

As we wrote about back in May, SDOT has been improving the intersection at Midvale Ave and 45th (near Meowtropolitan). The final phase of that work, to take place this weekend, will necessitate closing of part of 45th St.:

SDOT is working towards the completion of Transit Spot Improvements and one of their final elements of this work is to move the overhead trolley wires to match the new road configuration.

King County Metro (KCM) will transfer the wires this weekend, starting July 18. The work will necessitate a Saturday and Sunday detour for both eastbound and westbound traffic. The …

SDOT Cutbacks to Hit Home … But Not Too Hard

Jack June 27, 2020 19 Comments

While talk of defunding the police department has drowned out all other budget news, there’s plenty of fiscal pain to go around as a result of decreased city tax revenues due to Covid 19. We learned recently that SDOT will be reining in some of their work here in our neighborhood:

As of today, the City of Seattle and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) are putting a pause on many of our transportation projects, including the N 40th St spot bicycle improvements. While this part of the project is on pause, the remaining construction for the paving and bicycle improvements …

Paving of 40th St. to Finish This Week

Jack June 7, 2020 20 Comments

For those living near 40th St. the first half of 2020 has seen an increased pace of construction to smooth sidewalks, improve pedestrian crossings and lay new asphalt. Along with those benefits, though, have come some necessary ills: noise, dust, traffic delays and detours for pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles alike. (Residents up near 50th St. have already endured a far longer period of the same. That work is now complete.)

But the end is now in sight. We received word from SDOT this week that they intend to finish the paving of 40th from Stone Way to Latona, the …

Kitaro Site Razed

Jack June 4, 2020 16 Comments

It takes a long-ish memory to recall what, if anything, once stood near Molly Moon’s at 1624 N. 45th. In fact, it was Kitaro Bento Sushi (or is it Kitaro Sushi Bento?) that burned there almost eight and a half years ago as we wrote about here. While we have had periodic updates on the charred remains (Kitaro News Flash: It’s Still a Burned Out Shell), there has been little in the way of action at that property.

But perhaps I’m not the best one to recount such ancient history. When a reader recently wrote to us to say that …
