Plan Ahead for July 4 at Gas Works

Jack July 2, 2019 4 Comments

It’s that time of year again when our neighborhood plays host to forty thousand or so people hoping to get a close up view of the Lake Union fireworks display (organized by Seafair and sponsored by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, as it was last year) on Independence Day at Gas Works Park. While this only comes once a year, it definitely has some impacts. Knowing what’s going on can help you navigate some of the inconveniences posed by this event. We received here at the blog a Community Notification from Michael McMorrow, Event Producer at Seafair. Says he:

More Parking Zone Changes are Possible

Jack June 18, 2019 11 Comments

Why, it seems like yesterday that we were talking about Restricted Parking Zones (RPZs) here on the blog. It wasn’t exactly yesterday, but it was as recently as last October that Jordan wrote about RPZ changes here in the neighborhood. His article termed these changes “final.” Well, those changes may have been final then, but we now have before us a new set of changes which are anything but final. You can weigh in on these changes either by submitting comments online or attending a public meeting. More on that later.

First off, what’s being proposed? The color-coded map elsewhere …

Changes to I-5 South Onramp from 45th Street

Jack June 13, 2019 29 Comments

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the onramp to I-5 southbound from 45th Street had undergone some changes with regard to the HOV lane (the rightmost of the two lanes on the ramp). Some readers have noticed it, too.

Previously, HOV traffic was allowed to enter the freeway without stopping. During busy times, the left (non-HOV) lane was metered forcing traffic there to wait for a green signal from the light at the left of the lane.

Now, two lights hang from an overhead beam. During busy times, both lanes are metered meaning that HOV and non-HOV traffic must …

Got Junk? Balo Wants It

Jack May 25, 2019 2 Comments

Have you accumulated a whole bunch of junk, but just never seem to find the time to haul it away? Here in Wallingford, we’re lucky to have the transfer station right nearby, but if you’re like me, the size of your car (if you even have one) and the size of your load of junk are badly mismatched.

Balo USA, a non-profit working to support impoverished women, children and families worldwide and headquartered right here in our neighborhood, will help you clear out your accumulated detritus while you help them raise money for their cause. Balo will haul away your …

From Wines to Whines: Kindercare to Arrive on 45th

Jack May 19, 2019 1 Comment

If you haven’t walked or driven past the 45th St. onramp to I-5 recently, then you may have missed the large banner on the side of the huge building on the northwest corner of the I-5/45th junction announcing the imminent arrival of a new Kindercare. And if you were paying attention to your driving while you passed, you would definitely have missed the large, plastic sign on the roof of the building marking Kindercare as the new flagship business in that building, the former home of Wine World.

While the building has long been home to the Cosmopolitan Apartments whose …
