WM Driver Collects Trash, Saves a Life

Jack October 26, 2022 Leave a Comment

It began as an ordinary day for Russell Ruhle, a driver for WM (formerly Waste Management), one of the city’s contractors for collecting trash, yard waste and recyclables. But then, as Ruhle maneuvered his truck up the 4000 block of Sunnyside, he noticed someone signaling to him from the sidewalk. It was mid-afternoon on Friday, October 14.

It had been an ordinary day for Neal Stuber as well. While his wife, Carol, was out doing some shopping, Neal busied himself with some yard work outside his home in the 4000 block of Sunnyside. As he went up the stairs to …

Gasworks Brewing Preview

Jack September 20, 2022 Comments are off

As things stand, my nearest brewery is Fremont Brewing followed closely by Ladd and Lass. Note that neither one is in our neighborhood. Why don’t I just go to a neighborhood brewery? Because there isn’t one. Well, all that will change come next year.

Last Saturday, I attended an event that was part fundraiser and part open house at what will someday be Gasworks Brewing’s new space. Located at 2401 North Northlake Way not far from Westward and Bowriders, the space offers great views across Lake Union and the opportunity to arrive by boat at the nearby dock.

On tap …

RVs Removed from Northlake Way

Jack July 15, 2022 10 Comments

For over a year now, RVs belonging to the otherwise homeless have been parked along Northlake Way between Dunn Lumber and Westward. This has led to the accumulation of much trash (which the city tried to clean up in February, as we wrote about here), but also events such as fires.

Now, the RVs have apparently been moved out. A reader writes:

I am writing because I am cautiously optimistic that the public health nightmare that was the long line of parked RVs has been permanently cleared from N Northlake Way. I am politically progressive but became acutely aware of …

Seafair Returns to Gas Works This July 4

Jack July 1, 2022 Comments are off

After a two-year, pandemic-induced hiatus, the Seafair Summer Fourth celebration on Lake Union and at Gas Works park will take place once again this Independence Day! This year’s celebration is sponsored by Amazon. You’ve probably heard of them.

While festivities culminate with the fireworks display after dark, events and entertainment begin mid-afternoon and stretch through day. Two beer gardens will be available to slake your thirst, and of course, there will be food. Live music will be performed throughout the day on a stage immediately north of the gas works. And there is also a “Kids Zone.” Not sure what …
