Guild 45th Theater Resurrected

Lara June 8, 2025 Leave a Comment

Come walk with me.* A mere 27-minute walk from the heart of Wallingford** resides a quasi-resurrection of the Landmark Guild 45th Theater in all her former, pink glory. Though now aptly named The Lake.

The walk north in the direction of Green Lake is fairly linear, though not for long, as my dog and I make our way through North Wallingford and into Tangletown, so named because of the deviation from the city’s typical grid pattern, creating a “tangle” of streets. This is one of my favorite parts of wandering the neighborhoods south of Green Lake. There are a plethora …

Lincoln Athletic Field Location – Wait! MORE options?!?

Lara November 13, 2024 27 Comments

TL;DR A survey is being conducted regarding the potential construction of an athletic field at Wallingford Playfield Park. The results will be shared with Seattle Parks and Rec, and Seattle Public Schools. Take the quick Lincoln Athletic Field Location Options Survey.

As a resident of Wallingford, who lives a block from Wallingford Playfield Park with two small children, we rely on this beautiful, local green-space year-round. In fact, when we bought our house, we happily gave up having a backyard knowing that the Wallingford Playground and Park would become our ‘backyard’.

The proposal to turn the park into an athletic …

Toddlers Like Sushi Too

Children's tray of Japanese food

Craving some sushi but don’t feel like leaving the neighborhood with toddler(s) in tow? Fret not! Nestled into an old home on 45th is a sweet little Japanese restaurant called Kozue. They’ve been open for about 2 decades and unlike most restaurants, in my humble opinion, they’ve gotten better!  Kozue is one of my families’ go-to when we’re craving Japanese food and want to stay hyper-local. We’ve been regulars for almost 5 years, sporadic dropper-inners before that.

One reason we love coming here is that we always get a table. Now of course we’re coming during ‘small child family …

Practicing for The ‘Big One’

(IMAGE: SEATTLE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS HUB NETWORK)

Back in June a neighbor and I attended a Seattle Emergency Preparedness Hub event over at the Phinney Center. This was hosted as part of a city-wide disaster practice organized by the Seattle Emergency Hubs with a goal of getting volunteers together to set up their Hub and simulate helping neighbors.  The practice scenario: “the entire city was shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake along the Seattle Fault Line. All power communications have been disrupted and the city is full of FIFA visitors!”. My neighbor and I walked around role-playing various community members with needs and/or services to offer, all …

Egg Sammy Brekkie For the Commuters

Julia's of Wallingford sign for commuter specials

Not everyone can afford a $16 breakfast, let alone has time to sit down and enjoy it. For those on a budget (time and money), the recently reopened Julia’s is here for you! They have a series of offerings they’re calling “Commuter Breakfasts”, including things like an Egg Sandwich for $4.99 and a Quick Go Burrito for $8.99. I’m thinking this is ideal for the service workers in our neighborhood who commute from outside the city! Tell your barista, hairstylist, or cashier about this. They might appreciate you looking out for them!

These specials are offered weekdays only.…

Your Next Meal at Murphy’s

Reheated Buffalo Chicken Wrap

While we all wait to see what happens with the future of the Murphy’s Pub property, I invite you to try my favorite dish on their menu: the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, $16. It’s everything you might want in a well-rounded pub meal. Fried chicken with just the right amount of buffalo sauce, a healthy smattering of veggies and beans, and just enough cheese to remind you it’s still pub food. Select the fries as a side, a pint of Bodhizafa, and your night is set. Let me also be clear – I have not tried everything on the menu. In …

Cup ‘o Joe under the radar

Lara December 26, 2023 Comments are off

If you find yourself in need of a quick and easy pick me up, in the form of quality but inexpensive, drip coffee during that weird purgatory between Christmas and New Year’s, stop on by TNT Taqueria. Yup, the taco restaurant on 45th between Meridian and Bagley with a small indoor seating area and walk-up window. They sell a “medium” size cup of Cafe Ladro coffee for $1.66* after tax (what?!?). It’ll be sure to get you through the new year. May as well get another cup on your way to your polar bear swim too 😉

*Price as of …
