OK, Steve Winwood won’t be there but YOU should be. Come and learn some new steps and kick up your heels in community with others to support two local non-profit organizations strengthening individuals, families and seniors in the north end.

It’s Dance 4 Wallingford, a multicultural and intergenerational community dance party on Saturday May 11th, 2013, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at the Wallingford Community Senior Center (WCSC). The idea for the event came from the “World Dance Parties” that other Seattle organizations have hosted.

You are not under attack. I repeat, you are NOT under attack. Just wanted to make that clear right up front in case you hear some amateur radio traffic tomorrow morning that sounds like all kinds of mayhem is in progress. Relax, it’s just Seattle’s semi-annual all-city preparedness drill running from 9:00 am until around noon.

Let’s talk UTILITY SAFETY, specifically natural gas. Ever wonder what you should do if you smell natural gas or how to turn off your gas in case of a leak, fire, or major earthquake? Aging appliances, corroded pipes, and aging infrastructure can be the cause of fire or explosion in your home or neighborhood. North Seattle experienced an explosion in September 2011 and gas fires have caused widespread damage in many cities after a major earthquake.

With the earthquake in Japan in the news these last days, I thought it might be a good time for an update on community preparedness planning in our own back yard. Nothing like a big disaster to get people’s attention about making some basic preparations.

If you listen closely this Saturday morning, May 22^nd, from 9:00-11:00 AM you may hear several unusual reports of destruction, mayhem, and emergencies occurring around Wallingford and all around the city. The network of volunteer HAM operators, the Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service or ACS, will be holding an exercise to test the emergency communication network up to the City’s Emergency Operations Center, EOC.
