Tribute to a Beloved Wallingford USPS Carrier

Gary Shigenaka January 2, 2024 Comments are off

Happy New Year, Wallingfordians! There hasn’t been a lot of love heaped on the USPS since that DeJoy fellow took over during the Dark Times. And I know from personal experience that mail delivery around here can be an adventure, if it happens at all. But our neighbor Mary posted this really lovely tribute to her longtime mail carrier over on Facebook, and I asked her if we could post it here as well. It’s a reminder, for an upcoming year that is sure to try the patience and good will in all of us, that there are dedicated and …

University Cooperative School (Pre-K to 5th Grade) Open House, 2 December

Gary Shigenaka November 25, 2023 Comments are off

Wallingford resident and parent Katherine passed along this announcement about an open house at a nearby (U-District) cooperative school. While we at Wallyhood typically try to maintain a tight focus on our neighborhood, these days parents cast their nets more broadly and this is just on the other side of the freeway from Wallingford. The information below was provided by the school.

University Cooperative School is a community-oriented, pre-K to 5 school with a progressive, experiential, multi-age approach to learning. Students, educators, and parents work together to create an intimate and caring community.

The school’s environment is both vital and …

Wallingford Artist Gallery Show at Good Shepherd Center – 11/28

Gary Shigenaka November 24, 2023 Comments are off

Those of who you frequented the Wallingford Farmers’ Market at Meridian Park during the summer may have seen the works of local artist Melinda Hannah, who specializes in architectural renderings. She has a gallery show coming up at the Good Shepherd Center on November 28th and invites the community to view her new artworks that focus on homes and buildings.

Melinda worked for the Seattle Times for eight years, before setting out to pursue her new direction as an artist. She has found our neighborhood to be a good fit and has established a strong link to the people, places, …

Thanksgiving: What’s Open?

Gary Shigenaka November 22, 2023 1 Comment

It is nearly Thanksgiving, the holiday that has sadly become something of a footnote as Black Friday Eve. But many people still maintain the old traditions of gathering with family and friends to enjoy an abundance of food and polarizing discourse. It used to be, that if you realized that you were one brussels sprout short of a side dish; or desperately needed another couple bottles of wine to make it through dinner with Uncle Bob; or required bandages and tourniquets to stem the bleeding from that knife-related prep mishap in the kitchen—you were out of luck, as most stores…

City Council Candidate Info for Districts 4 and 6

Gary Shigenaka October 22, 2023 2 Comments

When we at Wallyhood gathered with some of our writers, readers, and unsuspecting passers-by who were trying to mind their own business out on the patio at Murphy’s, one of the comments we received was that the person would like to see more coverage of local/neighborhood politics. We are aware that many of you probably come to Wallyhood to avoid politics. But we would be a little remiss if we didn’t mention that there is an important election coming up in a few weeks.

We are not in the business of endorsements here, but we can provide a sampling of …

The Future of Wallyhood: Followup from the Meetup

Gary Shigenaka October 18, 2023 3 Comments

I’ll cut to the chase first: It looks like Wallyhood will live to see another day! Or more, if things work out.

At least some of you know that the editors here have been trying to figure out a path forward and ways to make the site both more accessible and more sustainable for the long term. We gathered at our default meeting place, Murphy’s, after contacting our stable of writers and inviting anyone else who might have an interest in Wallyhood. When the editors first began discussing this, we were a little worried that it would be just the …

Trends in Wallingford Crime

Gary Shigenaka September 26, 2023 6 Comments

Wallingford has been in the news lately, and not in a good way. There was a recent child endangerment incident, the tragic house fire and family deaths, a Medic One vehicle whose windshield was smashed on 45th with a rock while on a response, and the murder of a tent camper along NE 40th. Earlier in the year, there was a startling home invasion in which the residents were thankfully unharmed. This past weekend I watched the evening news and saw a local reporter standing a few houses down on my street doing a story on rampant…
