Rocking and Racing Through Wallingford!

Patrick June 26, 2010 Comments are off

Both the Rock and Roll Marathon and the Mountains to Sound Relay Race are coming to Wallingford this weekend. That means a couple of things:

1. Traffic may very well be snarly on Saturday! (Rock and Roll Marathon).

But there will be a band at every mile – so you can head on out to cheer and hear some music, all at the same time! The Whole Bolivian Army will be at mile 18 (36th and Aurora).

The Rock and Roll Marathon is in its second year, and while the folks running the half won’t quite get to our neighborhood …

Wallingford Works – From Home

Patrick June 22, 2010 11 Comments

Before I began working at home, I used to wonder what the heck all of those folks were doing in all of those coffee shops!

I’d stop for a cup of coffee on the way home from a meeting and would think “They can’t ALL be students. Or writing the Great American Novel. Or checking out internet sites that they can’t watch at home. What ARE they doing?”

Turns out – while some ARE students, writers, and folks wanting a break from being in their home – a LOT of them are working from home – but home means my …

Meals and Wheels

Patrick June 13, 2010 4 Comments

This seems like a perfect match for Wallingford – and features a terrific Wallingford restaurant to boot. (It’s our very own Cantinetta – check out the reviews from your Wallingford neighbors!)

Here’s the deal: On June 29, all you have to do is ride your bicycle to dinner! Yep, that’s it!

It’s part of an effort of the folks at Spoke & Food to raise awareness about how easy it is to use your bike to get to and from dinner AND the event will raise money for Lettuce Link, a program of Solid Ground –and also a Wallingford staple!…

Mad Lib Forums!

Patrick May 26, 2010 Comments are off

Surely you remember Mad Libs? You know, someone would read a sentence, you’d fill in the blank and before you knew it – you had a story!

Well – if you spend ANY time at all on the Wallyhood Forums (and if you don’t, you should), you’ll know that between the posts, and the names of those posting – this is a classic case of the truth being better than fiction!

Why, just this week we had these words popping up in the various forums. String these into a story to see what you can get:

Vinyl Black Cat Maximillian…

Wallingford’s Best Traffic Circle

Patrick May 13, 2010 15 Comments

My wife and I noticed this even before we bought our house and loved the whimsy – I remember leaning out the window as we did a loop around the circle (yes, we went ALL the way around, like a good motorist should) to see what each sign would reveal.

I’ve asked around the neighborhood, but no one is talking. I see a gleam in the eye of a couple of neighbors – but thus far the artist remains elusive!

On occasion, someone takes offense and puts duct tape or otherwise marks up the sign.

They remind me a bit …

Wallingford Weekend Roundup

Patrick May 7, 2010 Comments are off

Hurray, Hurray, the first of May, outdoor (you fill in the blank) begins today!

That’s right – conventional wisdom says that all things outdoor become a bit more possible in the month of May. Wallingford has a host of opportunities (indoor or out) for you this weekend!

Friday, May 7

Cut It Out, Wallingford – Curb Cuts, That Is!

Patrick May 6, 2010 3 Comments

That’s right – curb cuts. You know –  the modifications to sidewalks to make it easier to get from the sidewalk, down the curb, across the street and back up on the sidewalk? When nicely done, they look like this:

It looks like Wallingford is getting a few more, on Thackery Ave N and NE 44th. (Actually – these are ADA ramps – but everyone calls them curb cuts!)

I used to think they were for folks with mobility challenges, but now think they are for everybody else, too. (Big thank you to the folks that worked so hard to …
