Local author Laureen Nussbaum speaking at the Wallingford library

Wallingford-based author Laureen Nussbaum will be reading from her new book, Shedding Our Stars: The Story of Hans Calmeyer and How He Saved Thousands of Families Like Mine, at the Wallingford Library on Sunday, December 8th.

During World War II, Nussbaum’s family was saved from deportation by Hans Calmeyer, along with over 3700 Jews. In Shedding Our Stars, Nussbaum tells Calmeyer’s story and what drove him to save so many.

Holiday craft markets happening this weekend

It may not yet be Thanksgiving, but holiday markets are happening in our neighborhood this weekend. If you like shopping locally, Wallingford has two events next weekend that will meet your needs.

On Saturday, November 30th, head to Mosaic Community Coffeehouse from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Wallingford Arts and Crafts Holiday Market. This event is free and all ages, and it features 25 local artists and crafters selling unique, hand-made items.

It’s not too early to start planning for the holidays, particularly if you are a crafter and need to make all those local, handcrafted gifts that everyone appreciates. To that effect, Wallyhood reader Elli Stricklin wrote to let us know that together with the group Wallingford Arts and Crafts, she’s organizing a holiday craft fair this year at Mosaic Community Coffeehouse, and the time to apply to be a vendor is now.

Plenty of road work in the neighborhood starting this week

Commuting around the neighborhood is about to get trickier as road work crews get started on the Green Lake and Wallingford paving and multi-modal improvements.

Straight from the Department of Transportation, here’s what you can expect:

Ice cream catastrophe!

Did anyone else wake up during that epic rain storm last Friday? The Molly Moon’s location in Wallingford had a rude awakening after the roof of their store collapsed from all the rain. The shop is closed for repairs until Monday, August 12th. They will reopen with buy one, get one free scoops all day on the 12th. In the meantime, if you want to get a frozen treat in the neighborhood, better head to Fainting Goat Gelato instead.

Bus Lane Extension Planned for N 45th Street

Coming this winter, westbound riders on the 44 bus will get to their destinations quicker, courtesy of a new transit lane on N 45th Street west of Stone Way N. There is already a transit lane on N Midvale Place, and SDOT is simply extending it all the way to Stone Way. In order to do that, they will remove the lane for cars going straight on N 45th, and it will be one way between N Midvale Pl and Midvale Ave N.  …
