Anthony Huss Artist Reception at Blue Star

Lynn Post January 26, 2018 Comments are off

For the past two months, artist Anthony Huss has shared wall space with nine other artists for the inaugural exhibit of Kerf International at the Blue Star Cafe. This month, he has the space all to himself! His fabulous abstract paintings are now on display in the back room of the restaurant through Saturday, March 3. But you can meet the artist at the opening reception this Saturday, January 27, between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m.

Anthony started out as a photographer thirty years ago, but even then, his style was abstract. His photos had the look of various materials, …

The Last Laughs

Lynn Post January 9, 2018 3 Comments

Since June 2015, Murphy’s Pub has been hosting a free monthly stand-up comedy show, Wallingford Laughs, on each second Wednesday. I had a chance to catch up with Andre Pegeron, the show’s producer, to find out more about him and how comedy found its way to Wallingford.

Unfortunately, a week after our meeting, Andre informed me that, after a two-and-a-half-year run, the show is coming to an end due to low attendance, and this Wednesday, January 10, will be the final performance.

It is a big loss for the neighborhood. I thoroughly enjoyed the show that I caught …

Homeless for the Holidays—Part I

Lynn Post December 20, 2017 22 Comments

What to do about the housing and homelessness crisis in Seattle continues to be a contentious and difficult, yet pervasive, issue for our city. With the cold, harsh winter weather fully upon on us, it continues to be a hot topic, but it seems most people are relying on politicians and government agencies to come up with a solution. The recent news of Nickelsville moving into Wallingford has brought that conversation and debate to a hyper-local level, stirring up strong emotions, fears, judgments, and accusations on both sides of the NIMBY vs. YIMBY camps.

But while the armchair activists, HALA …

“Truth is Up For Grabs” at Good Shepherd

Lynn Post November 9, 2017 Comments are off

If you’re looking for something to do this post-Election Day weekend, you might want to check out “Truth is Up For Grabs”–part of the Wayward Music Series and funded in part by 4Culture–at Good Shepherd Center on Saturday evening. Member and 2014 inductee of the Earshot Jazz Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame Amy Denio presents:

A song cycle of eight new compositions for chamber ensemble. Inspired by current events, the economy of war, and poetry by Pablo Neruda, Denio’s music is harmonically rich and engagingly rhythmic. The orchestra contains a wind quintet, a brass quintet, a string octet, electric guitar, …

Trick or Treating at Wallingford Center

Lynn Post October 30, 2017 1 Comment

Though I would personally prefer to cross paths with Jordan and his whiskey wagon on Halloween, some parents, especially those with younger children, may prefer an easier, hassle-free trick-or-treating option to just get the job done. For those families who like to keep the holiday short and simple, but still sweet,  Wallingford Center is your best bet.

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Halloween night, all twelve shops will be participating in the free, family-friendly festivities. The center is always festively decorated, and part of the fun is their custom-made backdrops for some great photo opps.

It’s also their …

Enjoying Life on the Sunnyside

Lynn Post October 29, 2017 Comments are off

When I first moved to Seattle in 1993, I regularly visited a coffee shop in the University District called The Last Exit on Brooklyn. The large, rustic, high-ceilinged warehouse space was a sanctuary for the artistic, bohemian counterculture—a vestige of the beat generation—that once defined the city. The large, round wooden tables were always filled with “long-haired hippies” (both old and young) sketching in notepads and painting at easels; reading and writing (with actual pen and paper) poetry, novels, and song lyrics (maybe for that evening’s open mic); playing Go, chess, or backgammon; discussing philosophy and politics; and drinking coffee …

Kerf Artists Find New Home at Blue Star

Lynn Post October 17, 2017 1 Comment

This Wednesday, October 18, Kerf International, a multidisciplinary artists’ collective, will be holding its first opening-night reception at the Blue Star Cafe. The back room of the restaurant, normally adorned with the well-known and beloved vintage photos of historic Seattle, has, once again been transformed into an exhibition space for local artists.

For ten years, Kerf used unleased space in Wallingford Center for gallery exhibitions each month. Unfortunately, this long-standing arrangement came to an end in 2016. Since leaving Wallingford Center, Kerf has been exhibiting at the Home Realty office in North Seattle, and last summer they collaborated for the …
