For those of you who didn’t make the rounds in the neighborhood, we wanted to share that Halloween is alive and well in Wallingford. More trick-or-treaters roamed the streets and more residents handed out candy. While some brave Wallyhood dwellers encouraged the old fashioned door-bell ringing of years past, others maintained the innovative delivery mechanisms born of the pandemic, like the candy cannon, the candy tube and the candy zipline.

In celebration of this year’s harvest, we are trying something new – a sitdown tasting experience of the unique heirloom apple varieties from this year’s harvest facilitated by Tara Macdonald, our incredible Good Shepherd Center Lead Gardener!

I was headed out of town to a family wedding and stopped in the Pacific Northwest Shop (Wallingford Ave, south of 45th street) to pick up a few local specialties to share. Much to my delight, I discovered not one, but several Wallyhood merch items! A chic wooden ornament, a big coffee mug and a charming sticker with the happy statement: “I heart Wallyhood”. Pictured below is also a sticker with the more traditional “Wallingford.” All made, of course, by Northwest artisans and companies.

The store manager, Matt, said there is a t-shirt in the works too.

Since our post a couple weeks back, there’s been a lot of activity around the closed W Green Lake Way N issue. I was about to post a lengthy update including the city’s response to our blog post, the mayor’s interest in “connecting the parks” through a permanent road closure, and Councilmember’s Strauss’ consistent advocacy for reopening the road immediately with a plan to create a two-way protected bike lane.

Instead I’m pleased to share with you the following update from the Seattle Department of Transportation/Keep Moving Streets team about the plan to reopen the road this fall.

The City of Seattle is considering the permanent closure to vehicles of the road (see image below) that connects Green Lake and Wallingford with Phinney Ridge and Greenwood. However, there has not been any community outreach on this decision. Residents who have experienced the negative effects of this road closure have started a petition to reopen the road and invite all impacted to consider signing it.   

The street was originally closed to automobile traffic as part of the construction on Green Lake Way and eventually the closure become part of the city’s “Stay Healthy Streets” initiative during the Covid-19 restrictions. …
