Sharon came to Seattle sixteen years ago to attend the University of Washington Law School and has been here ever since. House hunting brought her to Wallingford – the tree lined beauty of 40th just couldn’t be beat. Since then, she has practiced law, written some short stories, taken a detour into project management, and started a family. She currently works for a large Redmond software company and has moved to another home in Wallingford with Scott, their two children, and cat. She came to write for Wallyhood through her friend Jordan.

The Share shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford opened its doors over a month ago to mixed reaction from the local community. The first of two public forums sponsored by the church to discuss shelter related issues took place on September 18th. If you were not able to attend that meeting, you can read a summary of the discussion or take a look at meeting notes on the church website.

At the first public forum, a proposal was made to create a small team of concerned parties to review the shelter and its impact on the …

Community Engagement on Share Shelter

Sharon September 23, 2010 81 Comments

It’s been over a week since the indoor SHARE shelter opened its doors at the Gift of Grace church in Wallingford. A few days prior to its opening, SHARE held a notfication meeting to discuss the shelter with immediate neighbors of the church. Then on September 18th, Gift of Grace held the first of two open community meetings at Mosaic Coffeehouse to continue the dialogue. The second community meeting will be held on October 23rd from 10:30am to noon.

In both of the meetings, Pastor Fecher has indicated that he wants to continue the dialogue with the broader Wallingford community, …

Preschool plans to leave Gift of Grace location

Sharon September 17, 2010 60 Comments

Much community discussion and debate has been sparked by the arrival of the SHARE shelter at the Gift of Grace church in Wallingford. One of the primary parties to the ongoing dialogue are those directly related to Huckleberry Forest Preschool, which is currently located on the ground level of the church.

According to a Huckleberry preschool parent who contacted me this week, they have been discussing this issue and feel that they need to move forward to find a solution that best meets the needs of their children and the preschool community as a whole. To that end, the following …

Upcoming public forums to discuss SHARE shelter

Sharon September 16, 2010 36 Comments

As previously reported on Wallyhood, the indoor homeless SHARE shelter opened yesterday at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church. Following up from Sunday’s notification meeting, Pastor Jami Fecher sent an email to all meeting attendees who wanted to receive a follow up communication.

I’ve re-printed the email below with Pastor Fecher’s permission. His email, among other things, outlines a few upcoming public forums to be held at Mosaic Coffeehouse (4401 Second Ave North East), the first of which is this Saturday from 10:30am – noon. The next meeting will be on Saturday October 23, also starting at 10:30am. RSVPs for …

Community poses questions & suggestions regarding shelter

Sharon September 13, 2010 149 Comments

The recent announcement of SHARE’s indoor homeless shelter coming to the Gift of Grace Church in Wallingford has left many in the local community with unanswered questions, even after the notification meeting SHARE held last Sunday. As Wallyhood reported earlier, the main areas of concern for meeting attendees centered around the insufficient notification process by the both the church and SHARE to the community, concern over the screening process for shelter residents, the impact to the preschool, and uncertainty regarding ongoing communications with and inclusion of the Wallingford community in the current and potentially long-term presence of the shelter.

SHARE Homeless Shelter coming to Gift of Grace Church

Sharon September 11, 2010 147 Comments

I found out last night from a neighbor that SHARE is opening an indoor homeless shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford (2102 North 40th Street).

SHARE is Seattle Housing and Resource Effort. According to its website, SHARE is a partner organization of homeless and formerly homeless men and women that provides King County’s largest shelter network, with fifteen indoor shelters and two tent cities. All their efforts are self-managed, run by the homeless members themselves. In addition, the organization facilitates WHEEL (Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement League), a storage locker program, and a housing-for-work program called …
