However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

They’re back!

Jordan April 2, 2010 4 Comments

It’s official, the pledge drive to bring back the Lake Union fireworks in 2010 has crested the $500,000 mark. They’re back on. See MyNorthWest.com for the tally. This still leaves a question mark with regards to the 2011 fireworks display, which is unlikely to get the same pledge drive activity, but hey, that’s next year.

There’s a healthy debate going on in the comments section of our last Fireworks post as to whether this is money well spent. Hear what your neighbors are saying and join the conversation.…

Maybe Fireworks After All?

Jordan April 1, 2010 27 Comments

There’s a chance we may get a fireworks display over Lake Union after all (see Fireworks Canceled). After One Reel announced that a sponsor would have to come up with a cool half million to get the fireworks back on track, KIRO’s Dave Ross and famed chef Tom Douglas kicked off a pledge drive with $5,000. Microsoft and Starbucks have offered to match donations of $125,000 each, and dozens of businesses have stepped up to the challenge.

As of this writing, MyNorthWest.com has the total at $182,200 pledged, leaving just $67,800 to go to trigger the Microsoft and Starbuck’s matching …

Nike man, using that PSP?

Jordan April 1, 2010 3 Comments

The Seattle Crime blog is reporting an attempted robbery last night on 45th St:

The man was walking home March 27 around 3 a.m. when two men approached him at 45th and Wallingford Ave. The suspects told him he had a very nice PSP and Nike shoes. The victim told the men that they could buy their own stuff. […] The suspect then allegedly punched the victim in the face. The other suspect grabbed him and punched him in the back of the head.

He fought back and was able to scramble away. A group of people came out of …

Parents, are you concerned that your children may be a closet thespians? If so, you may want to send them over to the Public Theater at the Bathhouse on Green Lake for Future Files:

This spring, we travel forward in time with two exciting, one-act plays that challenge us to think about the world we are creating…. “The Days of Perky Pat,” by the award-winning philosopher-author Philip K. Dick, dreams a world where survivors of a global thermonuclear war live off what they can scrounge from the wastes and supplies delivered from Mars. “The Sequence,” by Vince Delaney (Writer …

Walmart comes to Wallingford

Jordan April 1, 2010 43 Comments

The Walmart Corporation announced an agreement today to purchase the building and grounds of Wallingford’s Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Avenue N) along with the adjoining Meridian Park. They plan to open their 5,783rd store there, the first inside Seattle city limits. In addition to their standard electronics, music, furniture, toys and home accessories, the “supercenter” will also feature  produce, baked goods, a deli and other grocery items.

Initial neighborhood reactions were mixed. Ron Waldman, head of the Meridian School, presently housed at the Good Shepherd Center, sees both benefits and drawbacks.

“Obviously, the loss of our existing school facilities …

No Fireworks at Gas Works

Jordan March 31, 2010 17 Comments

Sounds like Wallingford won’t have to fret about porta-potty shortages and marauding crowds of patriotic partiers this Fourth of July: One Reel has announced that there will be no fireworks display over Lake Union this year.

From their web site:

For the past 15 months, One Reel has worked tirelessly to secure a title sponsor for the 2010 Family 4th at Lake Union but, regrettably, we were not able to secure one in time to proceed with this year’s event. For that reason, it is with a heavy heart we announce there will be no fireworks or festivities at Gas …
