Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Rancho Bravo Update

Jordan March 30, 2010 9 Comments

We had the pleasure of chatting with Freddy Rivas this morning, owner of Seattle’s finest taco empire (we assume you’ll allow us that one truck in Wallingford and a converted KFC on Capitol Hill count as an empire, when the tacos are that good), Rancho Bravo (211 NE 45th St).

Those of you who tried a visit yesterday (and who didn’t see our tweet) may be wondering why it was closed. Never fear, it’s back in action and better than ever (or at least as good as it was before their fire): they were just moving the new, larger truck …

New Feature: Wallingford Nightlife

Jordan March 30, 2010 3 Comments

Wallingford is a bit like the proverbial elephant described by blind men: each of us experiences our own segment of it, and we miss out on the rest. In the hopes of expanding all our horizons, Wallyhood is pleased to introduce a new feature: a Wallingford Nightlife Calendar.

You can find it in our menu bar under “Calendars” (or follow the link above). We’ve got trivia nights, live music, tango and salsa, everything fun going on around the neighborhood after the kids have gone to sleep.

Got something we’ve missed? Drop us a line! Club owners, we’re free and easy …

Bikes for Books

Jordan March 30, 2010 Comments are off

Baby Z seems to have acquired his first obsession, and it’s the bike (or, as he refers to it, “by-KAH”). It is his first, murmured mantra in the morning (“by-kah, by-kah, by-kah”…eyes slowly open), the punctuation to his daily walks (yes, you are correct little man, that is a bike) and, no doubt, the stuff of his dreams.

It is unfortunate, then, that he may still be too young to deliver an oral book report to a librarian (unless, perhaps, the book concerned a certain two-wheeled transport, and his declarative could be restricted to a nominal exploration of the book’s …

Wallingford Art Walk rides again

Jordan March 29, 2010 Comments are off

Long-time readers know we’re big fans of the Wallingford Art Walk: wandering from shop to shop, grazing on nibbles, drinking cheap wine from plastic cups, chatting with the neighbors…and art!

After a winter hibernation, Wallingford’s First Wednesday will be returning in May, and don’t worry, we’ll be reminding you when the time is ripe. In the meantime, if you’re a business that’s interested in participating, the deadline to let them know is March 31st. Visit the Wallingford Art Walk web site for more info.

Hint to businesses: if you offer freebies or specials during Art Walk, you’re likely to get …

Go Down, Moses

Jordan March 29, 2010 2 Comments

If you read last year’s “Good Pesach!” post, you know how we feel about Passover: a truly bad-ass Jewish Holiday. The God of the Old Testament rains His wrath on those who enslaved His people, plagues fire from His fingertips, blood flows in the rivers, frogs pour from heaven, boils erupt on the skin of the oppressors, an avenging angel sweeps across the land in the dark of night, the very earth rises from the bottom of the sea to carry Israel to freedom and, finally, walls of water crash back together to drown the pursuing army.

Mortal Kombat: Exodus…

BBQ with Marco Polo

Jordan March 26, 2010 3 Comments

Wallingford has had an uneasy relationship with the motels along Aurora (see Motel Crackdown, More Trouble at the Italia Motel, Wallingford Inn Madness, Wrong Police Raid, for example). Rachelle and her crew have decided enough is enough. However, rather than flipping them the bird, they’re going to flip them a burger. She writes:

I am part of a community outreach group at a church off of 50th and Dayton (not quite Wallingford – but close!) and we are organizing a neighborhood BBQ for Sunday March 28th off of Aurora and 42nd next to the Marco Polo motel. Our hope is …
