Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Treehouses Wanted

Jordan March 16, 2010 2 Comments

Among our many fetishes, count the tree house. It doesn’t matter whether it’s old club-house style tree house, banged together our of scavenged plywood, scraps of two-by-four and Grandpa’s nails, rope ladder dangling below a “NO GURLZ ALOWED!!!!” sign, a Dwell-style ultra-modern tree house or some crazy sphere suspended in the middle of the air, we just love ’em.

Being so high off the ground, it feels safe and distant from the worries of the world. There are no deadlines or chores when you’re in a treehouse; no obligation to go anywhere because there’s nowhere to go; there is just …

Colbert Bus Stop

Jordan March 16, 2010 18 Comments

Every neighborhood has its iconic symbols. Fremont has the Troll and Waiting for the Interurban. Green Lake has, well, Green Lake. Ballard has condos.

Now, Wallingford has acquired its second iconic symbol. Yes, we have the Food Giant / WALLINGFORD sign that adorns the top of the QFC, and now we have…the Stephen Colbert Bus Stop.

Yep, in the dark of night (or perhaps during the day, we’re really not sure), Wallingford nationalists designated the bus stop on 45th Street in front of Wallingford Center as the “Colbert Bus Stop” by pasting the name to the front and taping …

Wallingford Crime Update

Jordan March 15, 2010 1 Comment

We promised you some time ago that we wouldn’t run regular, breathless stories detailing all the crimes around Wallingford. There’s crime everywhere, and harping on it creates the wrong impression of the neighborhood.

That said, when there’s news, there’s news. Saturday night, Kris wrote:

We saw a white male arrested tonight across the street from our house on 46th and Eastern. Six SPD cars responded to the call. I’m not sure exactly what happened or where it took place, but it sounded like the suspect broke into a house and tried to run away. Does anyone have any more information? …

Wally Pets opens today

Jordan March 15, 2010 10 Comments

The successor to the Four Legs Good pet store, Wally Pets, opens today. In our original post announcing the opening (New Pet Shop), a number of commenters mentioned their dissatisfaction with the old shop. For example:

I eventually had to give up on Four Legs Good after more than once I ran by to get pet supplies there, but was surprised to find them closed or in “be right back” state, and it kinda threw my whole errand schedule off for the day.

Cheryl, the new owner, has heard the complaints and has pledged to right the wrongs:

I thank …

Goldie’s For Sale

Jordan March 12, 2010 5 Comments

Erin reported that she had it from a reliable source that the reason for Goldie’s sudden closure was that they were under new management, and the liquor board had yet to authorize a license for the new owner. Andrew just provided us a new clue to the goings on in the form of this Craigslist posting:
