Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Lost child resolved

Jordan January 20, 2010 9 Comments

On Saturday, we noted that the Seattle Crime blog had picked up a police scanner report of a child found wandering barefoot and “not dressed for the elements” near near 50th and Wallingford. Well, the Seattle Crime blog has the resolution of the story now, as well: The good news is that shortly after the police arrived, her father, who was out looking for her, found her as well.

The bad news is that, in addition to carrying her pet rabbit, she was also carrying a small purse with her dad’s pipe in it. Not the tobacco kind. And an …

Wallingford Crime Report

Jordan January 20, 2010 1 Comment

We’re encouraging people to report criminal activity in Wallingford to the police and to the Wallyhood Crime Forum. We have no idea what the police do with their reports, but we’ll be rolling up the reports from the forum here, to help folks keep a pulse on the criminal beat.

A few people have reported egging incidents. Wallyhood is carefully restraining ourselves from the many obvious puns this crime offers.

A black shogun bike with pink-taped handlebars was stolen from someone’s backyard. It is sorely missed.

Solicitors are knocking on doors when they shouldn’t be (that would be always).

Cars …

A group of neighbors are gathering this Friday, January 22nd at the Good Shepherd Center for some communal cooking and meal sharing and the theme is Stews and Casseroles. From the Facebook event page for the Community Kitchen:

Based on the survey/discussion results of our November Community Kitchen, we have put together the plan for 2010.

Homelessness around Keystone

Jordan January 19, 2010 5 Comments

Occasionally, a note or conversation will start in the Wallyhood Forums that seems worth bubbling up to the main blog. Last week, a reader, BMacke, posted this note to the General Section:

Ever since the Keystone Church hosted the homeless folks from Nickelsville, several vehicles have been parked around that neighborhood (50th/Keystone/Sunnyside) where people are living in the vehicles. They run generators inside the vehicles and have all the windows blacked out. I’ve seen police demanding that they move, but they just show up again a few hours later.

I’m wondering is this is legal? The vehicles aren’t technically abandoned, …

Jazz at Dick’s

Jordan January 19, 2010 1 Comment

Another “why I heart Wallingford” moment.

Moseying over to Dicks at around 10 PM this past Thursday to fill a junk food craving,  I was delighted to be serenaded by a live jazz trio while waiting in line pondering which flavor of ice cream I wanted.  The singer who accompanied them said they got double-booked at a gig and decided to come over to Dicks and provide a little light dinner music to the patrons.  Lovely.…

Free Yoga

Jordan January 18, 2010 Comments are off

This Saturday, Jan 23rd is Yoga Day USA (as designated by the Yoga Alliance, the registry overseeing yoga teachers), and many around the city are offering free yoga for the day to celebrate:

Gordan Kaplan ([email protected]) writes:

The good folks at the Wallingford Center (Amy Singer) are donating space for me to conduct a free yoga class as part of that larger national event. Saturday morning from 9 am – 10:30 I’ll be teaching in that vacant retail space on the second floor near the North entrance. Space is limited, but if you want to share this with the neighborhood …
