Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

What’s in a name – an MLK Day Reflection

Jordan January 17, 2010 14 Comments

My full, legal name is Jordan Luther King Schwartz. Kind of an unusual name for a white guy (and a Jew, no less).

How did I end up with a name usually reserved for civil rights memorials and streets running through the hood?

Back in early 1960’s, Jim Crow laws, mandating separate facilities for blacks and whites throughout the South, were still very much on the books and enforced. When Dallas County, Alabama blacks showed up on one of the two days per month they were allowed to apply to vote, for example, they were arrested and beaten. Of those …

Child found

Jordan January 16, 2010 1 Comment

The Seattle Crime blog’s Twitter stream is reporting that a child was found by police wandering near Meridian Park:

Scanner: Police found a barefoot 5-year-old wandering near 50/Wallingford. Child is carrying a rabbit and has lighter in a purse

(Thanks for the heads up, Kerri)…

Great deal at Cantinetta

Jordan January 15, 2010 5 Comments

We’re not all about posting specials all willy-nilly, but $50 off a meal at Cantinetta seemed worthy:

Disclaimer: it’s one of those “social deals”, so if one more person uses that link, we get ours for free. That’s not why we mentioned it, though, just a perk.…

Adam’s Elementary Auction

Jordan January 15, 2010 Comments are off

Hot on the heels of the request for auction donations for the Meridian School, Jacqui writes:

Adams Elementary is one of Wallingford’s SISD cluster schools, and the only public elementary in the Northwest to feature complete arts integration in its curriculum. The arts curriculum is funded by the PTA, which in turn is largely funded by our annual auction:

Adams Elementary School Students Reach for the Stars – and the Paintbrush

Music fills the art-adorned halls long before the first bell rings at Adams Elementary, an arts-integrated school located in the heart of Ballard. Smiling faces surge toward their classrooms …

This Sunday, Joule‘s chefs Rachel and Seif are appearing on the hit Food Network show Iron Chef, and it sounds like they’ve got a viewing party planned. From their Facebook page:

InterConnection seeks old laptops for Haiti

Jordan January 15, 2010 Comments are off

We’ve always been huge fans of InterConnection (down on Pacific near Gas Works) for their work refurbishing old computers for poor communities around the world, for providing job training for people here in Seattle and for selling really cheap used computers and parts to help finance those efforts. It should come as no surprise, then, that they’re offering to pitch in how they can in response to the disaster in Haiti. Ally writes:

In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, InterConnection will be donating laptops to NGOs and aid organizations working in Port-au-Prince. The goal is to get 100 …

Get Your Garden On

Jordan January 14, 2010 Comments are off

Seattle Tilth, housed in Wallingford’s Good Shepherd Center, has a “dizzying” array of classes lined up for the next several months, on cold frames, goats, mushrooms, tools, perennial edibles and more. These classes do fill up, so if you’re interested, sign up now. You’re out of luck if you haven’t signed up for the January 23rd Beekeeping 101 course yet, for example, but there’s still time to sign up for the February 9th Beekeeping 101.

They’re also seeking a volunteer coordinator for their Early Edible Plant Sale in March (that is, they’re seeking a volunteer to coordinate their volunteers).

The …
