Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

GFORD!

Jordan December 24, 2009 Comments are off

The re-erection of the iconic Wallingford sign took a break with only “RD” complete yesterday, but they’re back at it today, John reports. One of the roof workers is dressed as Santa (or, perhaps…)

Kristin Maas, Public Affairs Director for QFC, adds:

We are so happy that the letters are going up, because that means we are getting closer to completion.  It’s still a little too early to have a confirmed date, but we are about 6-7 weeks out, if everything stays on schedule.

The Starbucks is open full hours – from 5am – 9pm.  You’ll find Theresa Dean, the …

Tradewinds Blows On

Jordan December 24, 2009 Comments are off

Tradewinds, the little shop nestled under the stairs in Wallingford Center that sells imports from India and environs is closing December 31st, according to the Wallingford eNews. Until then, they’re having a 30 – 50% off clearance sale.

We wonder whether other shops will struggle on through the holidays, then give up the ghost?…

Trip the light fantastic

Jordan December 23, 2009 1 Comment

We’d hoped to tell you more about the builders of this bit of electroluminawesomeness, but nobody was home on our two recent visits. We know from neighbors that they’re named Patty and Joe and that they’ve been at it for decades, but more, we can’t say.

In addition to the lights, there’s an animatronic Mrs. Claus waving, a choir of moving, singing angels, music and a very visible of who’s been nice. No sign of the naughty.

Check it out at 4059 Latona Ave NE, and please send in photos of the other neighborhood contenders.…

Wallingford mojo is back!

Jordan December 23, 2009 5 Comments

This just in: the emblematic W A L L I N G F O R D sign that rests on top of the QFC at the top of Wallingford Ave is back!

It ain’t Iwo Jima, but it’s a beautiful site. Wallingford, we’ve got our mojo back!

We also hear that the Starbucks-powered coffee shop that QFC is opening on their second floor is now open for business, though only in the evenings so far.

(Thanks to Dan for the tip and Angie for the photo!)…

Green Lake Skate Park

Jordan December 22, 2009 Comments are off

While we knew about Wallingford’s Inner Space Indoor Skate Park (3506-1/2 Stone Way N), somehow we missed not only the controvery surrounding the Green Lake Skate Park, but the fact that such a skateboard haven existed at all. If you want to learn more and get in the conversation, see My Green Lake’s Skate Park round-up.…

Reminder: Tell us about it

Jordan December 22, 2009 Comments are off

Just a quickie reminder: we’re trying to learn more about who you are and what you’re looking for out of Wallyhood, so we can make it more relevant and valuable. As a little incentive, we’re giving away a 12 oz bag of Wallingford-roasted Pangaea Organica to two respondents picked at random. The survey is short, so take a moment and speak your mind:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/218814/wallyhood-reader-survey

The results so far have been eye-opening and fascinating. A few tidbits:

50% of our readers live between 40th and 50th in Wallingford, 21% south of 40th and 11% north of 40th. The remaining 18% live…

Thank you, sponsors

Jordan December 22, 2009 Comments are off

It ain’t easy keeping this little ship floating, so we want to take a moment to thank all of the local businesses that are offering their support through sponsorship:

First up, welcome back Fuerte Fitness, Wallyhood’s once and future sponsor! If you’re looking for a giant-style gym with a gajillion machines and sweating muscle-men around you, head down to Gold’s Gym. If you’re looking for a simple and well-appointed neighborhood gym with enough equipment to get you in shape, try Fuerte. The best thing about Fuerte, as far as we’re concerned, are the trainers, which is their specialty. Frankly, …
