Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Wallingford Crime Watch

Jordan December 21, 2009 8 Comments

Honestly, we don’t like to harp on crime too much in these pages. It gives the impression that Wallingford is crime-ridden, which it’s not really, no more so than any other neighborhood in Seattle: it’s just crime-reporting-ridden). So no, mom, we don’t really need a burglar alarm, but it’s always nice to hear from you!

It also feels like pandering. Our readership always goes up whenever we run a story on crime. Next thing you know, we’ll be running “6 Wallingford stores that can improve your sex life”-type stories.

Anyhoo, lots of interesting crime going on around the hood. In …

If you’ve ever been ignored…

Jordan December 21, 2009 Comments are off

We cleaned out our Inbox this past weekend (scores of unread and “starred for foll0w-up” messages dating back to early 2008 in there) and realize that we’ve been dropping a ton of interesting Wallyhood stories on the floor: interesting photos taken by readers, crime reports, personal profiles, tips, all sorts of goodness.

We’re trying to get back on top of it and now that we’re building a strong bench of co-authors, rather than just trying to do it on our own, it should be easier. So if you’ve ever written in and didn’t receive a response, please don’t give up …

More broad daylight burgling

Jordan December 19, 2009 13 Comments

Hot on the heels of our neighbors at Latona and NE 42nd St discovering a burglar in their house at 7 pm, this was just posted to the Green Lake Mom’s list by a member who lives in the 50th and 2nd Ave NE area of Wallingford:

Wanted to give everyone a heads up that we were just burgled. A woman, about 40 with short dark hair, mixed race walked into our house at about 2:00pm today. My husband was home, upstairs checking on my toddler (my older son was next door). He came down and found her wandering around. …

Essential Baking leaving Wallingford

Jordan December 19, 2009 5 Comments

Eagle-eyed tipsters saw a note tucked into the Wallingford eNews that the Essential Baking Company is planning to shut their Wallingford bakery down. Wha-what? But…but…Rosemary Diamante!

We gave Lee at EBC a call to find out what the scoop was, and he confirmed that, while the exact plans are still being solidified, they are planning to move out of the bakery this Spring. A few years back, they acquired Parisian Star Desserts down in the Cloverdale area of South Seattle and consolidated their pastry and dessert operation with them. The bread-making is now soon to follow.

They have no immediate …

Kids Free at the Zoo

Jordan December 19, 2009 Comments are off

(This originally appeared on My Green Lake)

Beginning this Saturday, December 19th, and through Sunday, January 3rd, Woodland Park Zoo is offering free admission to the zoo for kids.

Just mention “Winter Fun” upon entry and one child 12 and under gets in free with each paying adult.

From the zoo:

Discover the “hot” and “cold” spots during your adventure. The warm, humid Tropical Rain Forest offers an escape from the chill where you’ll encounter ocelots, tropical birds and snakes. Snow leopards frolic in Australasia, and grizzlies, wolves, elk and more live in the award-winning Northern Trail where the animals …

Break-in

Jordan December 18, 2009 3 Comments

Jill just sent us this note moments ago:

Get the word out: lock your doors!  Turn on your lights!

At about 7:00pm this evening, burglars broke into our house through the back (mudroom) door, went straight upstairs and ransacked our bedroom.  My husband came home and scared them off – he heard people leave through the back door.  We have gone to tell a handful of neighbors while we wait for the police…

We are at 4065 Latona in the brick tutor with a red door.  (Did anyone see anything?)

7 pm on a Friday night?! What’s it come to?…

What, no Chanukah?

Jordan December 18, 2009 14 Comments

We’ve been collecting a good list of holiday goings on, including some Christmas Eve services at local churches and New Year’s Eve dinners at all the great Wallingford restaurants (if you’ve got anything to add to the list, which we’ll be posting shortly, please leave it as a comment on our Holiday Haps post).

Given all the Christmas and New Year’s talk, it’s been noted that we haven’t mentioned Chanukah, which might seem odd given our decidedly Hebrew religious leanings, and that we’re in the midst of it (Chanukah runs sunset to sunset, Dec 11 – 19th this year).

Truth …
