Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Cycloswarm?

Jordan December 18, 2009 2 Comments

Janey inquires:

I was driving home westbound on 45th at around 9:30 last night when I encountered a HUGE group of cyclists, like maybe 50, headed east. Happily, most had lights and helmets. Does anyone have any idea what that was about?

Update (3 pm): DOUG. has provided the answer: 2009 Greenlake Race o’ Champions, which, if we had been keeping up on our My Green Lake, we would have known.…

Construction on the Burke

Jordan December 18, 2009 1 Comment

Robby D. is wondering about construction blocking off the Burke down by Gas Works, in front of Urban Surf. Radically improving his chances of having his comments published, he included photos!

Today I was walking by Urban Surf, and I couldn’t help but notice the construction.  It’s a big mess, and I was here about a week ago, and I saw the exact same thing.  Never once have i seen a construction worker.  Have they just abandoned the work?

Not sure about that site, but we detoured around construction on the Burke down by Husky Stadium today, and there were …

Giving Postal a Good Name

Jordan December 18, 2009 5 Comments

We typically hear the worst when it comes to post offices and those employed therein, so we thought it worthwhile to share a bit of the other side of the coin. Steve wrote in with his great experience at the Wallingford Post Office on Wednesday:

I stopped off at the Wallingford Post Office last night at 6:35pm to use the self-service kiosk to buy stamps for my Christmas cards and to mail a small package.  Even though it was a half hour past closing time, there was a postal employee straightening things up in the outer lobby.  As he was …

Carolers on the Loose!

Jordan December 17, 2009 8 Comments

Maya writes:

Wondering if you had other reports of carolers last night (Wednesday 12/16)? I live on 43rd and Whitman and we had some lovely singing voices along the street last night around 8:30, right before a huge downpour.

Also, what is the protocol when carolers come to the door? Stand and watch? Join them? Give money? Hide?

An excellent question! Growing up in a Jewish (and somewhat enochlophobic) household, our reaction tended to be the same one we used when we ran out of candy on Halloween: shut the lights and duck. But a group of folks singing, it’s …

Holiday Haps?

Jordan December 16, 2009 6 Comments

So what’s the holiday haps around the neighborhood? We gotta figure that a bunch of bars and restaurants will be having New Year’s Eve specials, and probably a few churches are doing something interesting for Christmas. We’d be happy to compile and publish a list, but give us a hand here and let us know what’s going on.…

Kuma Coffee

Jordan December 16, 2009 5 Comments

(Wallyhood reader Ryan G. sent in this fine review of little known but much loved coffee house, Kuma Coffee)

We live in Seattle where it’s ok to be a coffee snob.  And that is a good thing.  We have some of the greatest independent coffee shops in the country in our own back yard… Vivace, Victrola, Stumptown, Lladro, Fuel… you get the idea.  We also have one in our neighborhood that you may never have heard of- Kuma, the storefront coffee shop on Stone Way next to that tile place that is never open between 41st and 42nd…
