Urban Nature Lovers Needed

Have you ever walked past an overgrown, untended plot of the urban landscape and thought to yourself how much better that little bit of green space would be with some love and attention? You are not alone! In fact, Seattle is filled with noticers, and some of them have noticed that Wallingford has a few places that could use some love - like the neglected areas at 46th and Midvale, 45th and Midvale and Aurora at 46th. These lovely noticers have…

New Establishments Coming to Stone Way North

Erika Sommer, journalism student at UW, writes: Stone Way North is about to become more busy with the construction of three new apartment complexes up and down the busy thoroughfare. T.J. Lehman is the development manager at Mack Urban, a real-estate development and management firm. His company is one of the developers on an apartment project called Ray on 3636 Stone Way N. Lehman said the demand for new developments in Wallingford is being driven by two things. One is steady job…

Metro Changes for Link Light Rail at Husky Stadium

Mike Ruby writes: Metro is going through another planning exercise to revise bus service to accommodate the new Link Light Rail stop at Husky Stadium opening in 2016. You can participate by going to the website at http://metro.kingcounty.gov/programs-projects/link-connections/. Their planning effort is starting by proposing two different scenarios and asking for your comments on each. Alternative 2 is, at least for Wallingford, essentially no change to the existing route structure. Alternative 1 offers some significant changes but, surprisingly, does not offer up…

Drinking at the movies

The Guild 45 theater has an application for a liquor license posted. Drinking while watching a movie has been the norm in Europe for years, but it's a relatively new thing here in the states. Seattle has its own share of cinemas that serve beer. I popped my head in to the Guild 45 to ask for more details. Employee Dylan said that the notice has been up for a while and they were just exploring the option of serving alcohol.…

Bootyland Moving to Wallingford Center

I stopped by Bootyland, the hip children’s clothing and toy boutique which moved from Capitol Hill into the former slot of Paron’s Closet in Wallingford Center. Jordan writes: Hopefully, they'll do better than Paron's Closet (http://www.wallyhood.org/2013/07/parons-closet-closing-notes/) and Izilla Toys (http://www.wallyhood.org/2011/10/izilla-toys-closing/), the latter of which made a similar move from Capitol Hill to Wallingford Center, where it discovered the hard way that Wallingford Center's organic foot traffic is fairly sparse. Although their opening was March 4th, they weren't quite ready for show…

Buckets of Cash for Your Pet Project

A few million dollars of neighborhood matching funds are available for projects in Seattle in 2015, and this is the month to attend a workshop if you are interested in scoring some of that cash. The match you provide does not have to be financial- you can match simply by adding up volunteer hours to the tune of $20 an hour, or professional services at up to $75 per hour. Matching funds are perfect for building or upgrading parks and playgrounds, including…

Bye Bye Bamboo, Ciao Chai

Kevin Schofield (Woodland Park Zoo volunteer and Wallingfordian) writes: The Woodland Park Zoo announced today that their two Asian elephants, Chai and Bamboo, will be moving to the Oklahoma City Zoo where they will join an existing herd of four female Asian elephants ranging in age from two months to 20 years and make it truly inter-generational. The OKC Zoo has a nearly-new elephant exhibit, opened in 2011, with four acres of outdoor space with room to expand further, and a…
