Avila Family Night

The Wallyhood's made their way to Avila last night for their family-night dinner. We thought the whole meal was fantastic: the salad was fresh and crunchy with bean sprouts and other yummies, subtly dressed, the boneless fried chicken was tender and juicy, the kale stuffed cannelloni was the superb highlight of the meal, the brussel sprouts were so buttery delicate even a child would like them and the pineapple upside cake was simple and soothing. All courses were served family-style, allowing…

Early word is that the Senior Center fundraiser held Thursday night raised over $10,000 to help pay off back-rent and back-pay, a great demonstration of the will of the community to keep the center open. If you haven't yet, read Erin's beautifully written write-up on the event for all the details. And don't forget, we're holding a fundraiser auction for the Senior Center here on Wallyhood, as well. 100% of proceeds will go towards keeping the Senior Center open (or, if…

Incident at Verity?

Pete asks: Any idea what the "incident" that caused the Wallingford Branch Of Verity Credit Union to be closed today is? We don't, but hope it wasn't like the Incident at Bartell's. Officers are looking for an older…

Community Kitchen Report

Rachel sent us a quick summary of the Community Kitchen meeting they held a week ago Friday: The Wallingford Community Kitchen was held last Friday night with about 25 people in attendance from throughout Wallingford and beyond. People came together to cook, share a meal and discuss the plan for 2010.  The biggest message was that people see this event primarily as an exercise in community building and getting to know one's neighbors and doing so in a sustainable manner.  Additionally, ideas…

Extraordinary Turnout for Senior Center’s Fundraising Effort

Three weeks into the closure of the Wallingford Senior Center, save for a few programs and one remaining staff member, the now ghost town of a building exploded with bluegrass music and the energized voices of well over 100 people last night. In attendance were staff members, the Center's Board of Directors, members from the Chamber of Commerce and the Wallingford Community Council, local seniors, families and notable local politicians: 2009 mayoral candidate, Joe Mallahan and city councilmember, Tom Rasmussen. Photos…
