Sponsoring Wallyhood

It's been a short three and half months since the first Wallyhood post appeared. Since then, we've covered art and gardens, people and restaurants, openings, closings, crime, goings-on and gossip (and Babalu!). We set out to make the neighborhood feel a bit smaller, help people to get to know each other and have a little fun along the way. We think we've done a pretty good job. Our numbers, for those who care about such things: ~240 posts 3,400 unique visitors…

Aqua Theater!

We're trying to wrap our brain around this: Led Zepellin and the Grateful Dead played Green Lake. Seriously, that's the poster from the Dead show, August 21, 1969 at Seattle's Green Lake Aqua Theater. Why didn't we go?! Right. Not born yet. Of course. Poor timing, then. The Aqua Theater at Green Lake apparently has a rich history, reaching far earlier than acid rock: others who played its haloed shores include Bert Parks, Bob Hope, Cole Porter, and Sonny and Cher.…

Chow Foods Update

You read it here first, folks! Earlier this week, we reposted, without a shred of evidence or independent verification, Mike's claim that the Chow Foods owners were parting ways and one of the owner's was moving his offices to the Loki Cafe space. Hey, as luck would have it, it's true! We just received this release from Chow Foods: Chow Food partners zigging and zagging. As of the end of April, Peter Levy and Jeremy Hardy, co-owners of Chow Foods, are…

Incident on Latona

On Saturday, we reported on a disturbance at 44th and Latona late Friday night. Today, we called the police to get more information: At approximately 1 am Saturday morning, neighbors around 4338 Latona Ave reported hearing shots fired from inside 4338 Latona and a fight in the street. When the police arrived on the scene, people were fleeing in the house. However, the residents of the house said that no shots had been fired. Instead, they asserted that they were having…

Morris Dancing at Dawn!

May Day is Friday, and David writes: I am the foreman of a Morris dance troupe which practices here in Wallingford (where I also happen to live). What is Morris dance? It is a traditional English ritual folk dance, danced with bells strapped to our legs and hankies or sticks carried in our hands. No one knows the exact origins of Morris dancing or how long the tradition has been around. [...] Some believe there to be an ancient Celtic or…

Clean-up report and Plans

Wallyhood was out of town this weekend (visiting our friends, the proprietors of the the gorgeous Guemes Island Resort, if you must know), so we didn't get to participate in Saturday's much ballyhooed Wallingford Clean-up. Nevertheless, we asked that a section of street be set aside for us on our return, and we did take reports from several who attended. Heidi of East Wallingford reports: Thanks to the members and neighbors who joined in the cleanup last Saturday: all our adopted…

Fremont Toastmaster

We're sorry, but we can't help it. Whenever we hear "Toastmaster", we picture Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian, his sword in the air, standing on a big pile of toast. "I am TOASTMASTER!" While we do know that Toastmasters International is dedicated to "fostering self-confidence and personal growth through a educational and supportive environment", we're pretty sure the end product doesn't involve a oaths of courage bellowed in a loin cloth. Unfortunately. Still, if you're curious whether we're wrong, check…
