Hyperlocal News and Wallyhood

We read with interest yesterday's New York Times on "Hyperlocal News" (‘Hyperlocal’ Web Sites Deliver News Without Newspapers). It addresses how small blogs and web sites are supplanting traditional newspapers, providing a level of focus that traditional newspapers never could, by covering the minutia of neighborhood life. Sound familiar? We were disappointed, though, that the focus of the article was big start-ups like Everyblock and Outside.in, which are nationally scoped companies that are trying to tackle "hyperlocal" news. Isn't that something…

Wanderlust

When people meet Baby Z, they tend to say one of two things: What beautiful eyes he has (he does, though) He's so alert (translates as "frenetically, voraciously excited about everything." cf. parental exhaustion) This was driven home to us the other night trying to enjoy a meal with friends at Via Trib in Fremont. Great food. Great company. Perhaps we'll eat in next time. Unwilling to give up entirely, however, we are hoping to pick up some tips tonight at…

Community Kitchens Meeting Thursday

Lily pointed us at a great project Southwest Seattle has going, called Community Kitchens. From their web site: It's a challenge for many people to find time to cook nutritious, tasty meals. Coming home hungry after a long day at work, it is tempting to open a can, stop for fast food, or take something out of the freezer. With Community Kitchens, you have an opportunity to put something into your freezer which is both economical and nutritious. You can also meet neighbors,…

Survey says…Head Shop!

Sigh. We don't consider ourselves particularly prissy. Our neighbors will be the first to attest that, though we've crested the 40 mark and have babe in arms, we're still wont to kick back and have a good time, old school, on occasion. Indeed, loyal readers will note that when we reported on the Puffin Glass head shop (Puffin'), it wasn't to disparage the idea of a (gasp) drug-related shop within sacred borders of virgin Wallingford, but rather to applaud them for…

Cakespy comes to Wallingford

We first came upon Cakespy when we saw a blog post about her "Taking it to the Sweet" street art installation. The premise was simple: she created little faux cupcakes and hid them around the city with little notes on them: No reason. No ad campaign. No political message. Just cupcakes. We love this kind of guerrilla art because it reminds us that beauty and creativity don't have to be framed, packaged, copyrighted and sold. Art is everywhere you make it.…

Recycling Day Mix-up

We're pleased as punch that the city is now picking up food and yard waste weekly instead of semimonthly*, but we were confused that in two pick-up days running, they neglected our recycling bins. Today, we checked the Seattle Intertubes and found out why: recycling pick-up day has switched to the other other other week for us, despite the flier they delivered to our clearly indicating the contrary: Anyway, in case you were in the same boat, we thought we'd share…

Clean-Up Wallingford

Hoyt spotted it earlier this week: the new Adopt-A-Street signs are up (see Adopt-A-Street, EWHA Represent and Clean-Up Report for prior stories). But it looks like the East Wallingford Hot Tub Association isn't alone in getting some of the action: Coincidentally, we just got a note from Senor Tyler today: your article a while back on adopting a street inspired my roommate and I to adopt our own! So we adopted 45th between the 5 and Stoneway. I'd be lying if I…
