Block Watch?

The recent spate of posts and comments on car prowls and the like fired us up to do something about it, so we reached out to Diane Horswill, Wallingford resident and Seattle Police Dept Crime Prevention Coordinator to ask for advice. She has been the one kindly collecting crime data for the Wallingford eNews, so she seemed like a good place to start. Diane was able to provide some additional statistics on car prowls in our area: I looked at the…

Yield!

Brian L. forwarded us a link to a Seattle P-I blog post, Police target drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians: Seattle police cited 53 drivers last Friday for failing to yield to pedestrians during another special emphasis on crosswalk safety. For an hour, plainclothes officers crossed back and forth in the crosswalks at two intersections: 41st Avenue and Stone Way in Wallingford and Martin Luther King Jr. Way and East Alder Street in the Central Area. One-third of all crossings…

Reminder: Eat This Book

Reminder: today is the last day to register if you want to enter the Seattle Edible Book Festival (first covered here in Eat This Book). The event itself is this Saturday afternoon at the Good Shepherd Center. Create a punny representation of a book in food or just come to admire your neighbors' wit and taste. Here's a slideshow of previous years' entries for inspiration. Free with entry, $10 donation gets you a fork and a seat at the table. Proceeds…

Petition Against Cuts

Mike from Solid Ground wrote: With the Mayor coming to Wallingford for his walkaround this weekend, Solid Ground is hoping to make a clear statement that in these difficult economic times, people do not want to see the budget balanced on the backs of our least fortunate citizens. We’ve launched a petition on Facebook and hope to get 1,000 signatures by the weekend. Can you post a story and this link? http://apps.facebook.com/causes/petitions/134?m=544a5251&recruiter_id=57030032 We're posting the link, because it seems mean not…

Strike Out Hunger Bowl-a-thon

Bowling. For some, a simple past time. For others, a gauge of the decline of the social fabric of our country. For me, a date with sweaty shoes. For Solid Ground, though, it's a fundraiser. Meagan Colbeck of Verity Credit Union writes that they are sponsoring a team in the the Strike Out Hunger Bowl-a-thon, benefiting Solid Ground's Food Security for Children program: As you are well aware Solid Ground is our friendly neighborhood organization that does a world of good…

Wallingford Secedes!

In a stunning move, the heretofore tranquil neighborhood of Wallingford seceded from Seattle today. At approximately 5:00 am, in a careful synchronized set of actions, Wallingford separatists detonated the 45th St and 50th St bridges that span I-5 and connect Wallingford to the University District on the East. Simultaneously, a group of frogmen commandeered a fleet of Greenlake paddle boats, expanding the northern border of Wallingford to the southern banks of Greenlake and establishing a northern Wallingford naval fleet. To the…

50th Street Market Closing

Dan S. writes us: Please help us sing a sad song: The 50th Street Market is shutting its doors permanently next week, following unsuccessful attempts to find a buyer.  The Market kept my family in milk and kitty litter for the past 4 years, and made our car-free lifestyle possible--without which we wouldn't have moved here.  It survived many years in many hands across the street from 7-11, and got regular car traffic from beer and cigarette shoppers.  I would have…
