Wallingford Envy

Hey Capitol Hill, we're sorry if we made you feel bad about the whole Word of the Week thing. Look, if it will make you feel better, we'll give you a couple restaurants: Rancho Brava, one of the best taco trucks in the city, if not the state, has expanded from its first location in the Winchell's parking lot to a new Capitol Hill location, in the old KFC lot across from Cal Anderson Park. Molly Moon's Ice Cream, one of…

Chickens and Bees and Goats, oh my!

Sure, sure, we've all read how the Obamas are getting in on the Victory garden action, digging up a patch of the White House lawn to plant veggies (and, we were pleased to note, install two bee hives). But come on, Wallingford has been getting its garden on for ages. And not just peas and carrots. David R over in West Wallingford has chickens in his backyard, as do the folks just south of the McDonald School on Latona and the…

Unpleasantness Report

Ian recently wrote us: My wife and I were walking home from the Rusty Pelican last night around 8:30.   Some homeless guy was walking behind us getting closer and closer and he started shouting obscene comments to my wife.   After 20 seconds she stopped (she's from DC so has a shorter fuse than me).   I told the guy that I didn't appreciate him talking to my wife in this manner and that I would appreciate it if he…

Travelin’

When we travelled Europe recently, we spent a fair amount of time in Hawaii couchsurfing with locals instead of paying for expensive hotels. Cost savings aside, it's an amazing when to get to "know the natives" and helps get you out of the tourist ghettos. How did we hook up? Couchsurfing.com, naturally. You fill out a profile and use it to find people in each town who are willing to host. It's all free, with people hosting for the pleasure of…

Town Hall Report?

Wallyhood spent our Sunday in our garden, prepping for the arrival of 10,000 bees later this week (more on that later), so we weren't able to attend the Town Hall Meeting with Sen. Murray. If a reader did attend, we'd appreciate a summary or perspective on what turn-out was like and what was covered. Much obliged.

Bucket Brigade Wrap-Up

Wallingfordites are a hearty lot, it must be said. Despite the rain, somewhere close to a 100 people showed up on Saturday to symbolically move Tweedy and Popp from their old locale to their new. While it's true that the move was symbolic (it's going to take longer than half an hour to move the whole hardware store, even with the Wallingford Bucket Brigade), it was good fun, especially for the assortment of items we passed hand-to-hand: garden gnomes, spinning flowers,…

Forums

We've noticed that people have been using the comments section to start conversations. It seems a shame that neighbors would have to wait for some relevant post here to start a conversation with their neighbors, so today we're proudly introducing Wallyhood Forums, discussion areas where Wallingford residents (and Friends of Wallingfords) can chat and get to know eachother. Go ahead, click on the Forums links in the navbar at the top and sign in. We've designated areas for general conversation, gardening,…
