Yeaterday I had the need to replace the waste and overflow drain assembly in two bathtubs in my 1923 home. Both were at least 30 years old,I installed them then. Called Beacon plumbing. I’m recovering from surgery and radiation treatments from cancer so a bit foggy from meds. 2 men came and did the job in less than 2 hours. I opened one wall for access. Other was easy open access. I got and signed off (foggy) on the bid. Paid bill. Had a better look at it this A.M. $2100.00!!!! no more than $100.00 in parts,so $2000.00 for 2 hours labor (2 men) BE VERY careful. I’ll not go with the big companies in the future. Not Beacon plumbing for sure. All my fault for not checking more closely. Plumbers, please your thoughts. Thank You

If you’re fucked up, don’t sign a contract and definitely don’t bitch about it when you wake up to reality. #toughlove

I agree.I really screwed myself. My question is do you think this is a reasonable cost for 2 hours labor? Plus $100 in parts?

Nelly could have chosen kinder words. To answer your question, it seems extremely high, even for premium charges like late night or weekend, if that was even part of the equation. If I recall my own interaction with Beacon (which has actually been quite positive) there was an hourly labor rate provided in advance or on the contract they asked me to sign. At any rate, they need to explain what they are up to and if they won’t do so to you, they can do so to the Attorney General’s office — you should file a complaint. Yelp.com and Better Business Bureau, too. Fire all rockets! And good luck in kicking cancer’s ass. I have had to do so a couple times and I’m in your corner!

The request for service was made the day before. Time of their choosing,so not an emergency. There is no hourly rate on their contract(my copy). I spoke with customer service and asked how they determine a job cost? Rep said they pick out of THEIR estimate book or other as I recall. Thin air? I was told to relax as rep had seen other jobs at $10K. Next day I inquired with Bob Oates plumbing and got more or less the same answer. They also estimate by the job as well,no hourly rate. Perehaps your job was some time ago, things have changed for sure. Thanks you for your support on my cancer journey.
I agree totally that I made a big mistake. BUT those sky high costs! Should I have been credited for opening the wall for access?

Shame them loudly and often publicly. AG, Yelp, BBB, etc. Go to war.

Beacon has a BBB average rating of 1.25 stars out of 5. It maybe temping to go with the big brand name around town, but definitely look them up in BBB to see what other people’s experiences have been with a company before you pull the trigger. Even if you don’t have a problem, try and search around for the best options for most major issues a home might have (plumbing, heating and hvac, electrical, etc.) Then when you actually have a problem or it’s an emergency, you won’t be grasping at straws to find a reputable company.

I wouldn’t use Bob Oates as a standard to hold them to, either. Not that I know a lot about this, just I vaguely recall hearing that they have their ways.

I hope there turns out to be some remedy. I don’t think there’s any way they can be forced to make any reductions in your bill, so it all depends on making them feel like it. That might take a lot of the proverbial carrots and sticks both.

I suggest you call Jesse Jones, KIRO 7 consumer advocate. His number is:
1-844-775-3773. I believe that is toll free. I think your story is perfect for him. Good luck to you.
