Spooktacular Events in Wallingford This Weekend 🎃👻

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi October 26, 2024 Comments are off

When we first moved to Wallingford, the previous homeowners warned us to stock up on LOTS of candy—and they weren’t kidding! Every year, around 100 costumed kiddos visit our house. If you want to partake, this is your friendly reminder to get some candy before the shelves at QFC and CVS are bare.  As a parent of young kids who have their costumes planned for the next three years, I can’t get enough of the Halloween spirit.

Inspired by Gary’s story about our neighborhood haunted house, I wanted to share a couple more events to help you celebrate this spooky …

Get in the Spirit of Halloween at a Neighborhood Haunted House!

Gary Shigenaka October 24, 2024 Comments are off

North Wallingford neighbor Kathy Bowie, whom we wrote about earlier this year in a feature about Food Not Bombs, also hosts a Halloween haunted house and is seeking assistance for that venture: either staffing as a ghoul or goblin, or less scarily, for batteries of all sorts to power the various attractions. Please consider supporting a good-humored neighbor as she provides some much-needed diversion right before a truly frightening election! You can call or text Kathy directly at 206-940-9973. And, you can visit the haunted house (311 N.E. 51st) on the weekend before Halloween (Friday 10/25 and Saturday 10/26, 6-8…

10th Annual Citywide Seattle Public Safety Survey Seeks Your Input

Gary Shigenaka October 23, 2024 Comments are off

Wallyhood heard from Talia, who is a research analyst at Seattle University and works with the Micro-Community Policing Plans (MCPP) team for SPD. The goal of that research is to review the annual Seattle Public Safety Survey results and provide opportunity for those who live and/or work in Seattle to discuss real time community safety concerns and build relationships with police at the precinct and micro- community (neighborhood) level. Talia asked that we share information about the survey with the Wallingford community.  Here’s the scoop:

Seattle University is administering the 10th annual citywide Seattle Public Safety Survey, which is accessible …

A Psychedelic Turtle?

Geoff Berg October 20, 2024 Comments are off

On a weekend in mid-September,  A group of Wallingford neighbors came together to repaint the street mural of ‘Bubbles the Turtle’. I recently walked by the intersection of North 41st and Interlaken Avenue North, one block west of Hamilton Middle School, and was struck by the size of this art piece, the bold colors of green, red, and blue, and the swirling shapes.

My first thought was that it had an almost psychedelic feel to it. No, I didn’t go into an alternate state of consciousness, but I was a little puzzled because I couldn’t quite make out the shape …

Wallingford Athletic Field

John Smart October 17, 2024 60 Comments
A flyer that came in the mail to local residents from SPS. It reads "We're planning a new athletics field for Lincoln High School students". "Join us in person or online September 19 at 6pm." www.seattleschools.org/lincoln-field

What is a park? Is it the grass, some trees, a path, a playground? Is it the tennis courts, and the occasional thwap of bright yellow balls? Is it a wading pool, open two days a week, 10 weeks a year? Is it just a set of amenities? Some fraction of our tax dollars?

These questions are important because on September 19, Seattle Public Schools (SPS), in collaboration with Seattle Parks and Recreation, proposed to turn most of Wallingford Playfield into an athletic complex for Lincoln High and Hamilton schools. You can read the details on the project site</a >. …

Art of the Table to Close

Jack October 14, 2024 Comments are off

In a newsletter sent out last week to subscribers, wallyhood among them, Dustin Ronspies, owner and head chef at Art of the Table which has been a neighborhood mainstay for over 17 years, said that he is closing his restaurant for good come late November. He pointedly said he would not be looking to open a new place, and implied that he and his family would be moving out of the area. No specific reason was cited for the closure other than the cumulative toll of 17 years of “long days and longer nights,” and a desire to move on.…

Bedrooms and More- Not Going Anywhere

lbush October 11, 2024 Comments are off

A piece of Wallingford history is going up for sale; only this time it’s not a sad loss for our community.  Bedrooms & More, a Wallingford stalwart, has just listed their original building for sale.

Fortunately, they aren’t going anywhere. They will continue to thrive in their fancy new building on the corner of 4th and 45th (designed in the offices of Wallingford Architect Stuart Silk).

After the completion of the 5-story building, they tried using their original location as a seating store, only to find that customers shopping in their new space often didn’t realize they sold living room …
