Finding Sushi in Wallingford: A Family Tale with a Happy Ending

Janet August 28, 2024 2 Comments

Back in the early seventies, my dad came back from a business trip to Japan hooked on sushi, which was rather unheard of in our Oklahoma town, population 25,000. If I remember correctly, there  weren’t any Japanese restaurants in the state (maybe Benihana in Oklahoma City?). About ten years passed before our family moved to Houston, and later, to New Jersey. We all learned how to use chopsticks, and got comfortable eating and ordering raw fish. After I went off to school in NYC, a visit from “Mr Bob” was always the perfect excuse to find a sushi restaurant  and …

The below article was written by Wallingford resident Colleen Kurke, with special thanks to Regina Maza Conlon for the older photos.

Saying Farewell to a Wallingford Icon

The First Church of the Nazarene in Wallingford, built in 1952, has stood as a testament to faith, community, and resilience for over seventy years. We’ve all heard the saying, “if only these walls could talk.” That’s how I feel about this church, which has always stood tall, strong, and proud.

Having lived across the street from this church for 17 years, I have looked upon this building every day as a beacon …

(IMAGE: SEATTLE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS HUB NETWORK)

Back in June a neighbor and I attended a Seattle Emergency Preparedness Hub event over at the Phinney Center. This was hosted as part of a city-wide disaster practice organized by the Seattle Emergency Hubs with a goal of getting volunteers together to set up their Hub and simulate helping neighbors.  The practice scenario: “the entire city was shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake along the Seattle Fault Line. All power communications have been disrupted and the city is full of FIFA visitors!”. My neighbor and I walked around role-playing various community members with needs and/or services to offer, all …

Seattle’s Gas Works Park to Host Music Festival

lbush August 19, 2024 1 Comment

Wanted to give the Wallingford neighborhood a heads-up that Gas Works Park is the site of another electronic dance music festival to the busy summer festival scene as British record label Anjunadeep’s Open Air Seattle sets up shop on Aug. 24.

Anjunadeep, founded by electronic group Above & Beyond in 2005 as an outlet for its more progressive deep house fare, promises a “curated lineup of label favorites and rising stars” for its upcoming shows.

I believe the lineup for the Seattle show plans to feature Anjunadeep artists Marsh, Nicky Elisabeth, Qrion, Nils Hoffmann, Eli & Fur b2b YOTTO. Doors …
