The Cat Clinic of Seattle—Another Wallingford Institution

Susan Gilmore June 2, 2024 Comments are off

Twenty years ago, my in-laws had a beloved elderly cat called the Witch. One morning my father-in-law started his car and realized Witch had crawled under the hood, caught her head in the fan belt and broke her jaw. Their local vet in Gig Harbor would not treat a 19-year-old cat with a broken jaw and a heart murmur, and offered to put her down.

So they instead brought her to the Cat Clinic on N 39th and Stone Way. There, the vet made no promises but wired her jaw and gently tended to her wounds. The Witch lived another …

Summer Camp Open at John Stanford International School – LSA

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi May 31, 2024 Comments are off

As a parent of a soon-to-be kindergartener and a soon-to-be second grader (who works more than a full time job), my family approaches the warmer months with mixed emotions. There is a frenetic energy in the air. While the kids begin to taste freedom, a lump of fear develops in my belly over how I will balance parenthood and work without the certainty and structure of school. For my family, relief comes in the form of a local summer camp hosted by Latona School Associates, which operates out of John Stanford International School on 2nd Avenue NE. The summer is…

Cat Traumatized After Meowtropolitan Break-In

Jack May 29, 2024 1 Comment

Back on May 2, the Meowtropolitan Cat Cafe located at 1225 N 45th St near the intersection of Stone Way and 45th was broken into by a masked intruder during the nighttime hours. Fox News covered the story, and we’ve embedded it below. Although they reported the basic facts, they failed to interview the only witness: Penguin, one of the cafe’s resident cats. We’ve got that angle covered for you.

Wallyhood: How did you first notice something was amiss?

Penguin: I’m a cat of habit. I have a route that I patrol every night here at the cafe, …

Wallingford Famers Market opens on May 29

Our beautiful summer is just around the corner and that means it is time for the Wallingford Farmers Market to open. This year it will open on Wednesday, May 29. The market is open from 3pm to 7pm every Wednesday until September 25.

The market is located in Meridian Park at 50th and Meridian Ave N just behind the Good Shepherd building. There is parking on Meridian Ave N between 45th and 50th and nearby in the neighborhood. It does get crowded with cars and the neighbors ask you to please park legally and not block driveways. The 62 bus …

Grow your own remedies

Ellen Robinson May 27, 2024 Comments are off

I have often said that herbs were my gateway drug to kitchen gardening. Thanks to the wonderful Wallingford Library, I can find more ways to expand my knowledge and my garden!

I recently stumbled across this book Backyard Pharmacy – Plants as Medicine, by Elizabeth Millard.  While she is based in Minnesota (with much different weather than ours – brrrr….) this is a great resource for growing, harvesting, and preparing herbal garden remedies.

With some newly repaired garden beds along my parking strip as an empty canvas I got to work researching medicinal herbs and creating a small “frontyard pharmacy” …

Frelard Tamales is Moving to Fremont

Daniel May 24, 2024 1 Comment

Frelard Tamales will be moving soon to 106 N 36th St. in Fremont. For the past nine years Frelard has been serving tamales from its store located near the corner of Latona and 65th. If you have ever been there, you’ll know you place your order from the window at the Latona location. Since that has become iconic to the store, they are taking the window with them to the new location. No exact date has been set for the move but it will be sometime this summer depending on getting all the right permits in place.

The new location …

Oily Runoff, Storm Sewers…and That Never-Ending Construction Project on Stone Way

Gary Shigenaka May 21, 2024 Comments are off

A (seemingly) long time ago, in a neighborhood not so far away at all…it was raining, and raining pretty hard. I was out walking, and turned south down Thackeray. There was a steady stream of rainwater flowing downhill. As is often the case here in the city, especially when it’s been a while since the last rainfall, there was a very noticeable oily sheen in the water as it cascaded down along the curb. I don’t THINK this was attributable to the oil change business there on NE 45th, it might have been from one or more of …
