The Octopus Bar Returns!

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi February 25, 2021 9 Comments

The pandemic has cooped us up in quarantine for over a year. With the days getting longer, we are growing itchy for a well-crafted cocktail and snack consumed on a patio! Soon, the Octopus Bar will join Murphy’s, Julia’s and Westward in offering pandemic-friendly dining for Wallyhood dwellers.

Coming in March: The Octopus will offer indoor and outdoor seating via newly constructed “STREATERIES” on both Bagley and 45th!

Last year, the Octopus Bar bobbed just down the road to its new location at 2121 N 45th Street. While the space evolved, the walk-up window, The Salty Shack, kept the restaurant …

Wallyhood 3.0

Jordan August 23, 2020 15 Comments

As Jack’s recent post, What Happened to Wallyhood?, alluded, I’ve bowed out from contributing to this blog. I want to apologize for the careless way I did it.

A little explanation is in order. I feel like I’ve been personal enough on these pages over the years that this won’t seem out of place.

I lived in the same house in Wallingford, just across from the John Stanford International School (or Latona Elementary School, as it was named when I first moved in) since early 1993. I went from temp secretarial worker to graduate student to Microsoftie to property owner …

What Happened to Wallyhood?

Jack August 19, 2020 11 Comments

COVID-19, with its attendant school closures and stay-at-home orders, has had a dramatic effect on all of our lives. Some people have way more time on their hands than ever before; some have way less. Here at Wallyhood, we’ve struggled to keep going. Ben furloughed himself several months ago; Jordan, the founder of Wallyhood, has moved away, though he continues to be in touch now and then. Katy is contributing when possible.

I’ve tried to maintain a minimal level of service to you, our readers, since March by answering email, publishing the few stories that came in from our writers, …

Part of 45th St. to Close Over Weekend

Jack July 17, 2020 1 Comment

As we wrote about back in May, SDOT has been improving the intersection at Midvale Ave and 45th (near Meowtropolitan). The final phase of that work, to take place this weekend, will necessitate closing of part of 45th St.:

SDOT is working towards the completion of Transit Spot Improvements and one of their final elements of this work is to move the overhead trolley wires to match the new road configuration.

King County Metro (KCM) will transfer the wires this weekend, starting July 18. The work will necessitate a Saturday and Sunday detour for both eastbound and westbound traffic. The …

We are talking about the Birds and the Bees…Support the pollinators!

Ellen Robinson July 15, 2020 2 Comments

Our home gardens in the neighborhood provide support and habitat for birds and insects.  Choosing certain plants that support these “friends” can help you keep the “foes” of your garden to a minimum.   After spending time and energy getting your kitchen garden a.k.a. “Victory Garden” installed, there is nothing more frustrating that seeing crops being stressed by pests and impacting the harvest you have worked so hard to achieve.

Plant stress and insect damage can be minimized by building your soil, paying attention to the health of your crops,  and keeping a diverse mix of plants in the edible garden.  …

Gardening in July is all about the water

Ellen Robinson June 30, 2020 1 Comment

June in Seattle started and ended the same way – with gray rainy skies!  We know where the term “June-uary” comes from I guess!  Here’s to summer kicking into gear in the Northwest like it usually does (on July 5th).   The good news is that the gardens are happy and the gardeners are not tired of watering yet!

Keeping your vegetable garden happy in the summer can be a chore.  The long stretches of hot dry weather are a challenge and it requires constant monitoring of the soil moisture if you want to ensure that all the hard work you …
