Wayne Horvitz at the Chapel

Jordan Jordan August 27, 2009 2 Comments

One of the treats of living in Seattle is that we share the town with many musical greats, such as Bill Frisell, Sir Mix-a-lot, Caspar Babypants and that jam-band guy who lives in Wallingford. Living here means you get to hear them play here, sometimes, too.

No, not that jam band guy, sorry.

But you will have the opportunity to hear the world-famous jazz musician and composer Wayne Horvitz this Saturday night at the Chapel Performance Space in the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N). The Wayward Music Blog has the scoop:

Full AnyWhen PhotoHailing from Euguene, Oregon, The AnyWhen Ensemble draws its influence from musical genres ranging from classical and new chamber music, traditional and contemporary jazz, and free improvised music, as well as rock, electronica and folk music. The music is intimate and personal, blending the spontaneity of improvised music with the balance and form of chamber music. Led by composer/trumpeter Douglas Detrick, the group includes Hashem Assadullahi (saxophones), Steve Vacchi (bassoon), Shirley Hunt (cello), and Ryan Biesack (drums, percussion). The AnyWhen Ensemble is currently on tour to celebrate the release of their first album, Walking Across, on 8Bells Records.

Seattle composer/pianist Wayne Horvitz will perform a set of solo piano compositions and then will join the AnyWhen Ensemble playing one of his compositions, arranged for by Douglas Detrick. Horvitz is the leader of Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, Pigpen, The Four plus One Ensemble and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Philip Wilson, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley, among others.

Saturday, August 29, 8 pm, $5 – $10 sliding scale admission.

I’ve been trying to catch a Bill Frissell show in Seattle for almost two years now (the last show he played in Seattle – that I know of – was in December, 2007). What gives? Is there a secret to catching the guy? Does he go by a code name or something when he plays in town?

I’m just a Wallingforidian looking for some good jazz guitar, that’s all…
