Santa Comes to Woodlawn Ave.

Chris Witwer December 15, 2009 14 Comments

Picture 006For about fifteen years now, Sharon and Fred Ehrig @ 3916 Woodlawn have put together one of the most spectacular yard displays of Christmas lights in Wallingford.  With 15,000 lights, reindeer (with personlized saddles), snowmen, candy canes, a rubber ducky gate, teddy bears and elves — you just gotta see this house.

And the best part — Santa.  Santa visits the porch every night from 5-9pm through December 23rd.  He hopes to stay until 11pm on the 23rd so everyone who enjoys the Christmas Ships can swing by and say hello.  Don’t be shy, though.  Many people stay in their cars and marvel at the lights, but you will see a whole lot more on foot.  Walk on up the driveway, see the lights on the side and back of the house, and peer into the extravagantly-lit front lawn from the front steps.  You might even get to speak to Santa or to one of his two live elves that plan to help out on the 23rd, weather permitting.

Picture 016While you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to appreciate Tony and Kay Horner’s house across the street.  They’ve got ice skating Peanuts characters, a life-sized Snoopy flying a holiday plane, and lights galore!

By car, take Wallingford Avenue south through the intersection at 40th.  Make the first right (39th street), go 2 blocks to Woodlawn & make another right.  The houses are about halfway up the block & you can’t miss ’em.  Just listen for the Christmas music.  Or check out a Google map here.

Enjoy!  Happy Holidays!

And thank you to the Ehrigs and Horners for making this nightly Santa wonderland available to all of Wallingford.

Ho ho ho!

If you haven’t gone by here, you totally should. Walking by and speaking to Santa totally put me in the holiday spirit!

There is a house on Thackery or Latona south of 40th that you can see from the 26 bus that is always decorated to the hilt for the holidays. Does anyone know the address or the history?

are we sure that’s a he? I could have sworn it was a woman a few years ago. No? Maybe a fill in?

I think they take turns. But yeah, I used a little creative license here. She uses a very deep voice — for the kids.

Hi everyone HO HO HO. I am a woman, but a Santas helper can be man or womam in Santa’s eyes. And yes I do BELIEVE. I am 64 and have been rocing for 15 years putting lights up fo 35 years. My head says I must stop because of my health but my heart keeps telling me I cannot. Because of the little and older children and yoy adults I keep doing it.

Hi Santa on Woodlawn. Thank you SO much for what you do. You’re house is awesome, it brings so much holiday spirit to the neighborhood. But do always please remember to take of yourself first! And yes, girl Santas rock! 🙂

    Thank you Santa!!!

We first stopped by your house when my oldest daughter was almost 3. You were rocking and waving so smoothly, that we all assumed you were a Robot Santa. When you started to talk, my daughter FREAKED OUT, absolutely terrified.

Fast forward to Halloween, and she decides she’s going to dress up as a monster, so that she can be scary. This was in part a retaliation against a friend of a neighbor, who scared her the previous year with a freaky mask. She announced “Last year, I was scared, but this year, I’m going to be scary. I’m going to scare those two guys.” I asked “What two guys?” She replied, “Pete….and SANTA”.

So, you’re now part of a family legend.

@Latonamom: A friend spotted the house on Latona this morning & sent me this note:

“Found the house! On Latona between N 40th and N 42nd. And, I believe I saw Santa holding baby Jesus. “

Jim sent the story and photos to us. Really neat. I am so glad you were still able to do this this year. Wish I could see it in person, but the photo is great!! Hope to “chat” soon.
